    Vulcan Isolationist Movement

Got some time to kill since I decided not to crank up a new series until DecTrek comes out. In the meantime I'm hoping some of you guys could come up with some ways to use the Vulcan Isolationist Movement (VIM) in a couple episodes.

The introductory miniseries will deal with refitting a ship in the Qualor scrapyard for the Vulcan Science Academy. It will probably begin and end at Vulcan, with probably one trip to Earth somewhere near the end.

I'm not looking to run the mini for more than 6 or so episodes, and it is really meant to acclimate everyone to the new system (and for some, RPGing in general), including me. The PCs will likely be enlisted / ensigns / lieutenants, jg, so I don't want to make things too tough. There will also be a couple major Vulcan NPC engieers/scientists.

    With that set-up, anyone?

Hrm. Well, the Vulcan Isolationist Movement is concerned that the other races in the galaxy are diluting the Vulcan Ideal. So, you need a reason for them to care about this ship / the PCs.

Maybe the ship is getting a valuable set of sensors or the like - something newfangled that will be a real plus for the science academy, and yet on the way home with said new ship, those kick-ass sensors pick up a distress call in a bad area of space where going will likely overload many of the ships relays (picture badlandy or ion-stormy type stuff). The distress call is automated, and somewhat old.

VIM Members: The call is old, and likely has not been heard before this. Taking the ship to rescue likely-dead <insert aliens> in an area of space where the ship would take extreme damage is illogical and a waste of resources.

Even for a Vulcan, that's cold - it should be a bit of a tip=off that these aren't your average Vulcan...

Oh, I don't think they have to care about the ship specifically. I was just thinking some type of incident might happen on Vulcan, they PCs are there at the time, and are in a position to get involved.

Which is not to say they <i>couldn't </i>have an interest in the ship, but it does seem unlikely. I guess I need to ponder a little longer.

A conflict between those who want to reconcile with Romulus and the VIM would be interesting... there's a published adventure set on Vulcan that might make a good into.

How about the ship being a new class named after Surak or another respected member of the movement? Something happens to the ship, sabotage by Romulans or even by other Vulcans who may not share their view?
