    One Quarter Vulcan?

We're taking in a new player...I hope he measures up...Anyway he's never actually played LUGTrek but we won't hold it against him.

Anyhoo, he wants to play a character who's 1/4 Vulcan and 3/4 human- sort of like that crewman with the barely noticable pointy ears on the TNG episode Drumhead (that's were he got the idea I believe). The question for my brother (and sister) Narrators is how would such a character be created? We have rules for 1/2 Vulcans but not for further generations of mixed heritages.
    Arise, arise, Riders of Theoden!
Fell deed awake: fire and slaughter!
Spear shall be shaken, shields be splintered,
    a sword-day, a red-day, ere the sun rises!
Ride now, ride now! Ride to Gondor!

You could create a "mixed" template for the hybrid parent, using the basic rules to mix the Vulcan and Human ones, then mix this template with the Human template once again (the player would have to decide wich species was dominant for his mixed parent).

You may also rule that, for the final character, the Human template has to be dominant (ie he can only pick two attributes from the mixed template). Also, you could lower the cost for the mixed species Advantage (maybe +4 only).

Well that's how I would proceed anyway. Hope it helps

I leave the Mixed Heritage Advantage as it is, and just play the abilities as before, except instead of letting the player choose which species is dominant, the 3/4 race is dominant compared to the 1/4 (in so far as traits/attributes, anyway).

I have a 3/4 Human, 1/4 Betazoid doctor. I gave him the human-dominant species traits and skills, with a Psi and Presence of a Betazoid. But then I went a step further and knocked his Psi down by 1, and gave him a range -1 edge (and bought Receptive Empathy 1).

How about give them a choice of what disadvantages to take from the Vulcan template? Either Hides Emotions or Code Of Honour: Vulcan and Curious. All stats are human in nature with 4 courage pts and the psi 1 with either -1 range or focus.

This should create a nice 3/4 character with that extra pointy ear feeling.

I believe that the character from the TNG episode was 1/4 romulan.

i agree, just modified certain things, like i ahve a char in my game that is 1/4 klingon an 3/4 vulcan (don't ask) klingon stregth and half the weakness of a vulcan, and he has 0 psi

Well the on screen evidence ranges from 'flavour' ie; the 1/4 genetics leaves a slight physical marker, such as Simon Tarses slightly pointed ears...

Through to useful genetic traits, which leave characteristics for the characters.

    Rulkes wise;
    Flavour
If the player simply want the background to flesh out the character, rather than the traits, then let them take the predominant species, and give them subtle ears or bumpy foreheads or what have you.

    Traits
If the player wants the points to make their character better, then ICON uses a 6 point advantage that actually helps reduce the munchkinism. So use it. The Mixed species template, doesn't just have to reresent half breeds, but any mixed species genetics can easily be represented...

I am going to have to agree with Dan on this one.

ALL player characters should have a well-developed background/history. If this player wants to include some (1/4, 1/8, etc.) Vulcan heritage in his character? Let him.

If you use the above, but he is choosing “Vulcan Skills” to flesh out the character? Have him take “Alien Upbringing +1(Or +2, do not have my books in front of me ) as a compromise.

If he is looking to alter his attributes or Advantages/Disadvantages? Go with the Mixed Species +6.

Hope this helps and let us know how it turns out.

I ran into this situation when I created a 1/4 Romulan, 3/4 human character, Ensign Mark Tairen.

I used the same rules for Mixed Species Heritage, except instead of 3 attributes from primary template and 2 from secondary, I put in 4 from primary and 1 from secondary. How does this sound?

How did you handle advantages/disadvantages for this character?

With only 1 attribute from the 'secondary' template and nothing else IMHO the cost of Mixed Species Heritage (6 pts.) is too high.

If a "1/4 + 3/4" character wants to have a bit more than just background flavor you could buy some advantages or positive edges instead of using Mixed Species Heritage.

Just let the 1/4 Vulcan character buy up his Logic edge and an advantage that represents a higher than average strength or endurance (bonus to athletics, faster healing, etc. - don't have the rules at hand right now so I can't give you specific adv. names).
