Fleet Data: In the early 2350's, during the Cardassian War, Starfleet felt the need to replace its aging Merced class escorts with a more modern design. On the other hand many Rigel class heavy scouts were sceduled for the Merchant Marine refit programm and needed replacements. With the Galaxy and Nebula allready on the drawing boards Starfleet realized that another two new ship classes would put a bit too much strain on its ship-building capacities. What was really needed was a ship that could serve as an escort and a heavy scout equally well.
This sounded a unrealistic to ship designers of the time, until someone came up with the idea for a downscaled Nebula class. Different modules would be used to adapt this new class to different roles. Starfleet liked the idea and so was born the Ulysses class.
From the beginning the Ulysses class has been plagued by minor technical problems resulting from a tendency of the designers to use components initially developed for the larger Galaxy and Nebula classes. Many of these problems are centered around the EPS network and make it difficult to increase system output over the standard operation settings. (Increase the difficulty for tests to increase phaser damage or shield power by +2.)
The class has been sceduled for a refit in the comming years to get rid of the problem. With ship-classes of the Perimeter Defense Directive program take over the more combat-heavy tasks from older vessels the Ulysses class will probably be used more and more for scouting and scientific missions in the years ahead.
Noteworthy Vessels:U.S.S. Ulysses, prototype; U.S.S. Orion, destroyed near the Badlands in one of the last engagements of the Cardassian War; U.S.S. Argo, assigned to deep frontier patrol along the rimward borders of the Federation; U.S.S. Galahad, destroyed on a long-range scouting mission in the Eloman-sector.

(1) Only 175 SU ?!
While smaller than the pods on the Nebula-class 175 SU still seems hardly enough to represent one of these equipment pods. Or at least that was what I thought, until I reminded myself that there is no direct relation between size and SUs. Originaly I was working with 200SU for the pods but that either left me with a lot of unused SUs or tempted me to cram in an unrealistic amount of equipment.
(2)The pods themselves
The Sensor Pod is the standard configuration for the Ulysses-class.
The Weapon Pod shown here is the configuration used from 2371 onward.
For an older weapons pod reduce the aft phaser arrays to 40 emitters each and reduce the range of the torpedo launchers to the more common 15/300,000/1,000,000/3,500,000km.
During the Dominion War another weapons module was produced in limited numbers that replaced the forward facing weapons (2 phaser arrays, 1 torpedo launcher) with 2 high-yield torpedo launchers (forward port and forward starboard) with a spread of 6 each and 1 Type IX, 80 emitters phaser array.
The Hangar Pod features two large shuttlebays, one with 2 large hangar doors aft and one with a dorsal door. Craft stored in the later use a large lift for take-off and landing, not unlike the runabout hangars on DS9.
In addition there are quarters for flight-crews and 2 maintenance bays for repairs and maintenance of the auxiliary craft that include cargo compartmens for spare parts.
(8SU per repair shops is a number arbitrarily chosen. These work like specialized science systems in game terms, only that they aid in engineering checks.)
The Emergency Evacuation Pod is just that, a pod used to carry up to 700 persons in an emergency and provide medical assistance. Ulysses-class ships equiped with one of these pods were used as mobile hospitals during the Dominion War and sometimes carried Starfleet Attack Fighters instead of the shuttles to provide covering fire during evacuations in hostile territory.
