    Lightbulb Sectors - Cartography

Discovered some tidbits while watching BoBW's today.

The E-D meets up with the Borg cube somewhere in the Wolf 359 system. And Locutus demands that they escort them to Sector 001.

Now that would imply that Wolf 359 isn't in sector 001. Also being 7.78 LY from Sol on a more or less Easterly or 4 O'clock facing. This would imply that Sol cannot be directly in the centre of Sector 001 unless you account for a Z axis discrepancy.

Another point I picked up while watching the episode was that when the Borg cube entered Sector 001 they cut straight to a shot of the Borg cube passing Saturn.

Again more cannonish info that the Sector 001 border goes through the Sol system or very close to it.

Also open to interpetation that the Alpha/Beta border line does indeed pass through the Sol system and shares a common border with 1 facing/edge of Sector 001.

Of course this is based off a primarily 2d view. Which incidently is what most Trek maptology is based on.

In a 3d perspective, this information could be fleshed out more of course.

Sig, am I right in assuming Sol is in the Centaur constellation?

    Sol in the Centaur Constellation?

I don't get you! Do you mean if Sol and Alpha Centauri are in the same sector then no.

If not that then, you do know that Sol is the scientific name for our Sun?

Or am I missing the question all together?

I treat Sol as on the border but officially in the Alpha Quadrant and Sector 001.

The example map is a cut and paste job from one of my maps. The sector arrangement follows this progression.

I was treating the question from the 20th century standpoint, ala constellations (they way we amateur astronomers look at the night sky today). There are 88 constellations, of which Alpha Centauri is the brightest star in the Centaur constellaiton in the night sky. If we could see the night sky from another viewpoint (say Alpha Centauri), where would Sol appear to be? Another star in the Centauri constellation?

The starscape from Alpha Centauri would be quite different to what we see. Although there would be a number of similarities I would have to say no to Sol being in Centauri.

I would think the constellation Sol would be in would be something on the opposite side to where we see Centaurus from our perspective.

Perhaps Taurus/Gemini maybe even Lyrae etc.

Would have to do some serious maths to work that one out.

WOULD it be very different? Sol and Alpha Centauri are pretty close in stellar terms - wouldn't most of the constellations only have minor variances? The obvious difference would be that Alpha centauri would be missing, and there would be another star (Sol) showing up somewhere - probably the opposite of where Centaurus appears to us, as Sir Sig said.

Again, I haven't done the math either, but I would think that the stars would only be slightly off from Alpha Centauri.

I seem to remember some Stellar plotting software that could do the math/star perspective from other systems.

Slightly off topic but while look at my attached map I realised that SpaceDock is probably officially StarBase 0 and not SB1 as I have it here. That way there would be a SB roughly centralised in each sector.

If you find said software, could you let us (or at least me) know? Thanks in advance

What constellation Sol would be in (when viewed from another solar system) would be ENOURMOUSLY dependant on the relative positions of the point of view. Even though Earth and Alpha Centaurai are close together.

    Bummer

I went through all my old astronomy software tonight and came up at a loss. Mind you some are so old that the zip files were corrupted.

Still some net searching might turn something up.
