    Exclamation New Skill: Art

I am just a ICON creative milking machine this week

I never really liked the Artisitc Expression skill, way to broad for me and I like Exacting skills. IF both Science and Engineering can have four or five separate skills I see no reason why Art should not have the same previlage consider it can be broken down into four componets as well. And please don't try and convince me Cooking is an artform, if it was BK and Mikey D's has totally destroyed that image.

    Art, Any (Intellect)
Art covers the wide range of methods all societies have used since time immoral to express themselves. Be it simple cave paintings on various worlds to highly elaborate computer generated performance art there seems to be a united desire among all cultures and races to convey thoughts and/or emotions by means of various mediums.

The art skills represent both the ability to understand, identify, and appreciate various art forms and styles as well as the ability to actually express oneself through those arts. Be it an actor or a dancer This skill has many meanings to the individual who has them.

    Art, Performance
This represents the characters ability to understand, identify and come to appreciate various forms of performance art such as the Theater, Dance and Singing of a specified culture or style. For instance the Character might be able to recognize the influence of an ancient Bajoran play in a new Andorian Song if they posse the Art, Performance (Bajoran Theater) skill.

Example Specializations: Ballet, Comedy, Dance, Film, Holo-Novels, Music, Opera, Theater Specific Cultures Performance art.

    Art, Literature
The Character has a deep appreciation for the written word as expressed in a cultures plays, novels and other works of fiction, and poetry. If they know a another cultures literature other than there own then chances are they can both speak, read, and write that cultures language as well. They might be able to tell the influence of Shakespeare in Klingon fiction or Vulcan Logic poetry in a newly released Terran song.

Example Specializations: Drama, Comedy, Tragedy, Specific Cultures literature

    Art, Graphic
Again like Literature and Performance the Character has a deep Appreciation for the graphic arts such as computer simulations , paintings, and sculpture. Also again the character can might be able to see the influence of another races graphic arts in the newer works of another or compare the two and make a judgment.

Example Specializations: Computer Imagery, Drawing, Painting, Holo-photography, Sculpture, Weaving and Specific Cultures Graphic Art.

    Art, Expression
This is essentially the original Artistic Expression skill from the original core rule books with added benefit that Cooking is removed. As to actually writing, the language skill now covers this area and when a player has Artistic Expression (Poetry) it means they write poetry in any language the player currently has.

You just try telling the Head Chef at the Waldorf Astoria that cooking is not an artform. You'll probably end up flying out the kitchen doors with a frying pan wrapped around your head.

Cooking is most definitly an artform...Your just not going to find that quality at BK or Mac Puke's that's all.

"And please don't try and convince me Cooking is an artform, if it was BK and Mikey D's has totally destroyed that image."

Don't let S John Ross hear you say that...s**t, I think you'd get killed in Texas, saying sumpin like that.
"War is an ugly thing but not the ugliest of things; the decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feelings which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. A man who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself."

Check out the TNG Players' Guide, too...

Hey, good stuff, Eric! I like the detail.

Just an FYI: The TNG Players' Guide (p.66-67) has an optional rule for eliminating some specialisations for broad-ranging skills. Artistic Expression happens to be one of them, along with Culture, Gaming, History and several others. Essentially, each of these skills under the optional rule works like the Language skill in the Core Books.

Sorry, I'm not trying to dump on your creativity, I just thought I'd point out to other folks that there's something already "in the books" so to speak.

    Steve
