    Question Academy Entrance Examinations

I'm just about to begin a new Star Trek:TNG series. I plan on starting the characters out as cadets and maybe running 4-6 episodes based on their time at the Academy. I'm looking for ideas for little vignettes (10-30 minutes tops) I can run covering the tests for admission to the Preparatory Programme and the subsequent Academy entrance examinations. I don't mind some or all of the characters failing at their first attempt to get into the Academy.

    Anyone have any thoughts?

Well the exams aren't easy! They even gave Wesley pause!

The Academy box set has some data but alot of people (like me) think its more just what courses they have and not much more!

Yes - I have the Academy boxed set & must admit I was somewhat disappointed. I do like the idea of starting the series at the beginning of the characters career though. I was planning on running the two scenarios in the boxed set plus two others I have mapped out. I just wanted to simulate the entrance exams in someway without resorting too much to dice rolls. The hidden tests/ stress tests / psych tests offer some possibilities & I have a few ideas. I was just wondering what other folks had done/would do.

Personally I started my lot just after graduation.
They were awaiting their first posting on some backwater world... and then the bar fight That was 2363.
Currently late 4th season TNG 2367; have been playing through and shall continue too.

My game starts the characters at the Academy. I started the game on the assumption that the characters had passed their entrance exams, and began them on Day 1 at the Academy. They entered the Academy in 2361.

I'm running them through their years at the Academy, with various scenarios centering on their studies (such as the final exam for Planetary survival ). I'm using the Academy boxed set for character creation, and for reference material, but after that I'm not using it an awful lot.

Hmm...I'll have to find out if the boxed set contains much info on the Kobayashi Maru scenario (or its 24th century exquivalent...)

If you want I'll be happy to email you my one-page outline for what I've planned for my characters through the Academy (in terms of course outlines, DPs, skills, etc...)

I had planned on running a campaign that started at the Acadamy. (It fell through, but that's another story). My idea was to go through one adventure a year, and use the rules in the boxed set for development based on their chosen overlays and skills.

Some of my ideas included a trip to the Mirror Universe, in which the Acadamy had been destroyed by the Klingons/Cardies, and was now a haven for street gangs (allowing the players duplicates to be there), and this group wanted a post Dominion War game, so they were going to be at the Acadamy during the Breen attack. The other two story ideas I had were pretty much the ones in the box, maybe modified a little.

Thats not a bad way to do it.
1 adventure per year for 4 years!

Gives some time at the academy and yet doesn't tie you down there.

Making me wish I had the book and that idea 3 years ago.
