    Mission specialist

    Ok, apparently I just can't find it today. I thought there was a "mission specialist" overlay in one of the LUG books. It's probably right in front of my face and I can't find it.

    Anyone want to point it out for me? Thanks!

    Cant help there Perrryyy. The only thing I can think of is that it might fall under the NCO's... Otherwise I am not sure it exists...

    As a personal note, I am not sure I would use one myself as I see the Mission specialist as a non-rank promotion, for a highly specialised or capable officer that is put in charge of a small group of fellow crew... ie; a Team Leader.
    But then I have several levels of non-rank promotion to reward players when a full rank has not yet been earned, going hand-in-hand with the removal of the ability to purchase rank after character creation.

    That's the direction I'm leaning too. I was bored & got to re-reading Gemworld (which granted isn't canon for most folks since it's a novel), which states Melora Pazlar as "shuttlecraft pilot, mission specialist, and stellar cartographer...".

    I like the idea of a non-rank promotion. I'll see what my little head can dream up

    Well, If you like that idea, this is what I had put on the Venture web-site a while back;

    Other Advancements:

    An officer doesn't necessarily have to move up a rank to be promoted and receive recognition for their ability. The other options of advancement available are:

    Mission Specialist: Assigned to an individual crewman, usually an NCO or Junior officer. This position represents a specialised area of interest and assigns seniority when dealing with such an area. Commonly a Department Head will assign a mission specialist as the senior ranking officer over a particular project and leave them to work, waiting for the final report once the project is completed. This position is always assigned by the senior ranking officer in a department (the Department Chief)

    Deputy Department Head: Once an officer has proved his worth they may be assigned as Deputy Department head. In this capacity they serve as an intermediary between the department and its chief, but also as a replacement if the actual Department head is away or unable to fulfil their duties. Once again this position is always recommended by the department head in question, but usually requires the authorisation of the ships captain. There is usually between 2-4 deputy department heads, usually having one assigned to each shift rotation.

    Department Head Assigned by a ships captain. This position is the senior officer in a particular field aboard a Starship or Starbase, and all personnel in that department report to this individual. They are responsible for the smooth running of both their personnel and departments, reporting regularly to both the ships XO and the Captain. (Standard Department head Advantage required)

    Duty Officer: This position is similar to that of the Second officer, however the Duty officer is a position applied to a highly efficient and capable officer. IT places them in command of the Gamma, or night-time shift. This is the officer who is in charge while the majority of the crew sleeps. Seen by some as a boring position, working while the work sleeps, and seen as a breeding ground for future senior officers by others (Starfleet Command among them). It is actions that this officer takes that can make the difference between life and death, if something happens while the ship sleeps. Like the second officer this Position is always held by an officer who fills another capacity aboard ship, and is usually held by an officer with the rank of Lt. and above.

    Second Officer: This officer is the third in command of the ship. Unlike the Executive Officer, the second officer always fulfils another position aboard the ship, and always in a departmental head capacity. The position is usually filled by the next ranking officer down from the XO, and is usually held by either another full Commander or Lt. Commander. (Must be a Department Head)

    Executive Officer: Occasionally the vacancy of the First Officer aboard a starship is available. Usually the replacement is assigned by Starfleet Command, however the actual choice is down to the ships captain. In some circumstances, there may even be a suitable officer of the rank of Commander already serving aboard the ship, if this is the case, then the officer may also apply for the position, and may even be more favourable to the ships captain. (Department Head is also required here)

    Could you be thinking about the TNG Players Guide? In the enlisted chapter there are a number of specialist templates though none of them are mission specialists per se that I recall off the top of my head...
