I always prefer using German ship names myself...Prinz Eugen, Karlrushe, Dredsen, Scharnhorst, Gniesenau, BIsmarck, Tirpitz...and my personal favorite, the Emden, the name of the daring commerce raider.

Personally I was always partial to the commerce raider Graf Spee. One of the more honourable Captains in the German navy, he would pull alongside his target give them an opportunity to surrender, take them aborad his ship then sink the target vessel.

A question if I may. As interesting as I find these lists of ships in other peoples games, what was the intended purpose here?

Have you seen the Emden Class vessel on Bernd Schneider's site?Ex Astris Scientia

I was going to use this vessel as a basis for my Crew's ship until I decided to go whole Hog and make a ship myself (which I have tentatively called the Republic class). I have the deckplans for the Emden all finished however so they will likely encounter one at some point in the near future (a Derelict ship or whatnot, something for them to board). Can anyone suggest a good name that I should use for it? (other than some of the fine suggestions already here of course)

The Emden would operate on a similar pattern. Captain Von Mueller would also capture vessels intact for use as supply ships (especially coal) and as transports for the crews of the various ships he sunk.<p>As for Admiral Graf Spee (the man, not the ship), his victory at the Coronel Islands was a massive blow to the prestige of the Royal Navy.

IMHO a handy resource for narrators needing names for ships in their campaigns.

Of course. I had to get the Meteor class from somewhere.

There's a whole listing of Emden class ships at Bernd's site. Just select whatever strikes your fancy. My preference would be the USS Braveheart myself.

    USS Maltese Falcon

Does anyone remember the quote from the movie about the falcon being the stuff of dreams? I think that might be a good dedication plaque quote, but I don't have the movie and can't remember exactly how it goes.

I usually like to add a touch of irony to my games. A Romulan Warbird that the PCs run into from time to time is called the 'Tolerant'

I usually don't go into this much detail, and I usually use the ship names from the series (via internet databases) or from supplements like Spacedock, or Among the Clans. I did make one specially named ship, the U.S.S. Tiberius, an Excelsior class, although by the late 2370s it's likely a Sovereign.

One thing I could never seem to understand about the Shows and Movies was the Very Large preponderance of Human Names for ships. With the exception of the Gorkon, the Surak and maybe a few others, I haven't seen too many that have names from famous other race's histories. Also, Instead of maybe The USS Revenge, What about a translation for whatever that particular word is into a different language? For example, maybe in Andorian, the word Revenge = Fulggroth so the Federation would christen the ship the USS Fulggroth. I would find it hard to believe that the Federation could exist with such a massive amount of Human dominance with all of the other species in the back seat just along for the ride. Just my two cents worth.

Well, LUGtrek had a few concessions to that. The USS Eagle (the starship crewed entirely by starfleet Andorians) had an Andorian name, which Starfleet translated as eagle. Presumably each original Federation member had a ship with similar properties. I can only assume the protocol is that they switched to Federation standard when opening channels or ferrying guests.

It'd be interesting to see something like this continue, can you imagine the Ferengi getting an Intrepid all to themselves if they joined the federation?

My suggestion would be U.S.S Archangel. A name I plan on using for a ship in my revamping of my campaign.

I'm curious, would they name it USS Moogie or USS Capitalism?

    If it helps anyone

    We've used:

    • Icarus - Daedalus, Ranger, Constitution, Excelsior, Ambassador, Galaxy
    • Quetzalcoatl - Galaxy, Intrepid
    • Indefatigable - Defiant
    • Avenger - Defiant (x2), Klingon Bird of Prey (borta'SwI - the two fought together in the Dominion War)
    • H.G. Wells - Defiant (scout modification)
    • Constitution - TOS Constitution-class, destroyed in Battle of Wolf 359 when Starfleet used her as a "fire ship", loading her with antimatter to ram a Borg cube - slowed the cube down long enough for Enterprise to catch up
    • Andromeda - Galaxy-class during a campaign back in college in 89-90.
    • Olympia - STII-era Constitution-class
    • Arkadelphia - from the FASA adventure "Decision at Midnight"
    • Vigilant - A doomed Miranda-class testing interphasic weapon (an adaptation of "Ghosts of Conscience" by FASA)
    • Oberon - A Miranda-class lost in the Fire Swamp and taken over by mind-controlling parasites (an adaptation of FASA's "Lost and Presumed Dead")
    • Victory - A Constitution-class ship lost in the space beyond the Fire Swamp, found by a pre-warp species and used to develop warp drive and forge their own Empire.
    • Talibak's Lost Latinum - A smuggler ship owned by the Ferengi Incini, named in honor of his first customer, Talibak
