With so many ships lost with all hands throughout the centuries, passive security was one of the primary design objective at Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards. The spherical main hull is detachable. While not threatened by antimatter explosions, plasma leaks in the nacelles are a frequent reason for the destruction or severe damages of starships. This is why the whole nacelle assembly may be jettisoned too. The main bridge is not attached to the outer hull as in conventional Starfleet ships, but is located on decks 15 and 16 in the center of the primary hull, well shielded against direct hits. The Resolute class is also the first starship type with two separate and independently operational warp cores, one for normal operation and the second one as a redundancy system. The second warp core is usually in a stand-by modus, and is able to kick in only 10 seconds after it is requested. Pulse phaser cannons as in the Defiant class and bioelectric circuits as in the Intrepid class complete the modern equipment.
Although the U.S.S. Resolute was only meant as a testbed, Starfleet Command soon approved of four further ships of this class, with only minor changes to the prototype. The U.S.S. Nimrod was just about to be commissioned at Utopia Planitia when a Breen task force broke through the defenses of the Sol system. Starfleet's First Fleet did not anticipate this attack and was not able to intercept the Breen, so it was up to unmanned drones, planetary defense systems and the few operational starships to stop them. The Nimrod arrived at Earth simultaneously with the first wave of Breen fighters and eliminated three of them. With more Federation ships in orbit, the second Breen wave didn't stand a chance. The Nimrod alone destroyed two large Breen cruisers and six fighters, and the redundant warp core saved the ship when the Breen employed what seemed like a less advanced version of their energy damping weapon (it appears that they wanted to veil their true capabilities until the second battle of Chin'toka, therefore they didn't send their most recent ships to the suicide attack on Earth). Anyway, without the Nimrod, several cities on Earth would have sustained destructions similar to the one of Starfleet Headquarters. The Nimrod's performance in this battle may have facilitated the decision to build still ten more ships of the Resolute class.Commissioned ships:USS Resolute NCC-75631 Prototype, USS Consul NCC-75640, USS Octopus NCC-75641, USS Nimrod NCC-75698 fought the Breen in their attack on Earth (2375), USS Capitol NCC-75715

    Post Designer's notes

Since this ship is somewhat unusual, I'll explain a few things:

The bridge of the ship is not on top of the hull like other ships; it is buried in the spherical primary hull. Therefore, no enemy can target the bridge with a called shot
The warp nacelles are designed to detach if they are damaged and threaten the ship. Therefore, any roll to separate the nacelles in case of catastrophic damage is automatically successful.
These ships carry Styrofoam Man's STARSAFE reactor safety package as standard equipment. See the ASDB R & D page for further info.
Explaining the initials: P=Port, F=Forward, S=Starboard, D=Dorsal, V=Ventral and A=Aft
One thing you might notice is that I used a size of 7 for the ship, even though the length is in size 6. The ship was designed as a size 7 to account for the large number of decks in the design.
The ships pulse phasers deserve special mention. If you look on the schematic, look closely at the spherical hull...namely the gray stripes. Look and you will see 2 ovals per stripe on each view; these are the emitters for the pulse phasers.
This is how they work; each array is actually a targeting and EPS gating system. Each system is linked to the four emitters on its side; for example, the forward array is linked to the four emitters mounted forward. Each emitter, therefore is linked to three separate array systems. When the array fires, it gates plasma to the appropriate emitter for firing. Note the amount of overlap between the Pulse arrays firing arcs; a Resolute class can bring up to five pulse arrays to bear on a target. (FIVE?!! )
This makes the ship EXTREMELY lethal in combat. The arrays coordinate to gate plasma to avoid conflicts in the EPS systems. The advantages of this system are:

Total coverage of the ship, unlike conventional Pulse systems.
Increased flexibility in engaging multiple targets.
The Type X phasers are used for point defense and when extra precision or flexibility is needed.
Note also that the ship uses metaphasic shields; this was necessary because the ship does not have ablative armor.
Credits: The Resolute was designed by Bernd Schnieder, the webmaster of Ex Astris Scientia.

Well, I'm thinking a sensor platform myself. I'm also thinking of making it a fake bridge; thats where everyone will assume it will be. It is actually a dedicated holodeck with hidden phaser emitters. When some overeager boarding party enters here, they will fight and take control...only to have the room change into whatever ghastly fate I have in mind (needless to say, the safety interlocks will be removed). Meanwhile, I and m command crew are watching all the fun in the real bridge, eating popcorn and enjoying ourselves.

    Post Version 1.1

I went ahead and put together a webpage with the Resolute class write up on it. Here it is: The Resolute Class I also made some minor changes and corrected some errata. The main change was to remove a torpedo tube and expand the ship's shuttle capacity. BTW Bernd Schneider was kind enough to send me a picture with some notes on making a 3D model. I put it on the website.
