    Star Trek: The Reimagining

With the announced reimagining of Battlestar Galactica coming up from Sci-Fi.

I thought wouldn't it be a hoot to reimagine classic Star Trek.

    So here are the rules.

1] You may take any aspect of any of the Star Trek shows and add them in.
2] Kirk, McCoy and Spock must be the main 3 characters.
3] Any other characters are background characters, the same way Chekov, Sulu, Scotty and Uhura were in the original series. I know character X is your favorite, but what made TOS work was the dynamic of 3 characters, not 7.
4] The ship is the USS Enterprise, no a, b, c, d, or any other appleation.
5] They are part of the Federation.
6] None of the previous histories from the other series apply, this is a reimagining, you are setting new canon
7] Given that many film acotrs are now doing TV, you can cast anyone you like, so long as they are alive

So cry havok and have at it

    STAR TREK: THE RE-MAKE.

    THE CAST:
Scott Bakula as KIRK (Yes, I know, but I couldn't think of anyone else suitable for the part).
Gordon Curry as SPOCK (He plays Dent in a show called Codename Eternity)
Can't think of anyone to play McCoy other than DeForest Kelly.
    Ewan McGregor as SCOTTY
    Halle Berry as UHURA
Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa as SULU (He played Shang Tsung in Mortal Kombat)
Linden Ashby as CHEKOV (he was in a show called Spy Games).

I'll post more when something comes to mind.
He's an underprivileged skateboarding cowboy with nothing left to lose. She's a sharp-shooting goth bounty hunter who believes she is the reincarnation of an ancient Egyptian queen. They fight crime!

I was actually thinking Ewan McGregor would make a good Bones. Hmmm...let's see...No, how about William H. Macy.

Hally Berry would be an awesome choice as Uhura.

    Some alternative choices...

Kirk: Matthew McConaughey (his U-571 character clinches it for me)
Spock: Lawrence Fishburne (forget the color, he would be perfect)
    McCoy: William H. Macy
Scott: McGregor (hey, he *is* the best choice here )
Uhura: Garcelle Beauvais (ADA Haywood on NYPD Blue)
Sulu: ...I wish I knew more good young Asian actors...I'm lost here...unless we pull a gender bend and bring in Jacqueline Kim...as Demorah Sulu (hey, we are reworking the show here)
Checkov: I'm at a complete loss here...I'd say we'd bring in some young unknown

Another interesting choice for Kirk would be Matt LeBlanc.
    Davy Jones

    Question

Why not use, say, George Clooney as McCoy?

You could pull George's E.R. character straight from that show into Trek...besides, George already has a background in Medical Acting...

I went over this with a couple of ST friends, and we were thinking that Clooney would do better as Kirk than McCoy.

Another Kirk idea is Denzel Washington.

And for a Sarek to Fishburne's Spock? Samuel L. Jackson.

    Maybe Chris O'Donnel as Checkov?

Period - post TOS movies - pre Enterprise-C; not real chummy with the Klingons yet, the Romulans were in strong presence, and the Federation isn't that big. And darn it we need Gorn!

    Ship - Excelsior class

    Characters -

    Kirk (Capt): Lawrence Fishburne
Spock (1st officer/Science dept. chief): Famke Janssen (yeah, that's right, Spock's a chick!)
    Bones (Doctor): Kenneth Branagh
    Sulu (FCO): Ming Na
    (Engineering): Don Cheadle
    (Ops): Heath Ledger
    (Tactical/Security): Gary Sinise
(obligatory sexpot): Eliza Dushku (maybe a nurse - no counsellors yet)

Ming-Na would be another excellent choice for a female Sulu. In fact, I'd prefer her to Kim. hehe...Heath Ledger as Checkov...fits the "teen idol" profile that Walter Koenig was brought in under...

    Okay here is my go.

    Star Trek: The Re-Imagining.

It is the late 23rd Century. Mankind is a strong and powerful member of the United Federation of Planets. The USS Enterprise (Excelsior-refit class looking) patrols the starlanes, her 5 year mission, to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations... to boldy go where no one has gone before...

(Music up, and I can live with the TMP/TNG theme here)

Okay setting specifics. Take late movie (begining of Generations) style computer interfaces and designs. Pretty much the Blue-Cars as I have heard some call them. Quarters can have the Voyager style to them, I always felt they did the best job. But we use post First Contact uniforms, love those.

Phasers look like pistols still and we use the type III phaser rifle, since it looks most like an actual rifle.

There are no holodecks, but there is a VR Centre, where the same type of stuff can go on.

Main enemies are the tricky and underhanded-bumpy Headed Klingons (think ST 3)and the secretive and honorable Romulans. Over the course of the first season we will meet the Gorns and eventually the Cardassians.

As I said the characters are allowed to be chosen from any series, but Kirk, McCoy and Spock had to hold through. So here goes.

Captain James T Kirk - I have to agree with the choice of George Clooney on this one. He just has it

Commander Spock - I have seen some interesting choices thus far, but I can to say it is a hard one. Lawrence Fishburne would be amazing though, so I second him.

Dr McCoy - Okay big change as we put a woman into this role instead of a man, the basic character can hold, but in the end McCoys job on the show was always to provide the more "humane" choices to Kirk over Spock's logical choices. Famke Jansen was selected for Spock by someone, but I can see her here for sure.

    Now moving down the ranks...

Commander Montgommery Scotty - In a bizare homage, Colm Meany throws on the Scottish accent and takes up the challenge. He just seems right to me.

Lieutenant Uhura - Everyone seems to be going Halle Berri, but since I think she can't act for beans (personal opinion only) I go with Tyra Banks (who should have played Storm IMHO). Her extra long neck and Nubian beauty are a fine homage to Nichelle's gorgeous past.

Lieutenant Sulu - Big change, not only is Sulu not male, but also not human. Played by Chinese singing sensation Faye Hong, the Andorian Lt. Sulu provides us with a turly alien perspective. Her hair all done up like the Andorian from Avatar too

Lieutenant JG Data - Since Chekov was only brought in to try and boost ratings with the younger scene, I go with Data in this roll. But I want to recast with someone else as I feel Spiner has realyl gone too far with the character and has lost his sense of "wonder". Unfortunately I cannot think of anyone for the roll. Unless we make Data a female and shift Sulu back to male. Hmmmmm

    Ideas?

I dunno about this one. Given the personality of Kirk, I don't know if he could have the same kind of relationship with a female McCoy that he had with Bones. Not that he wouldn't trust her, but I think there would be an underlying sexual tension that would damage the close friendship between the two. We really need a male character here, I think.

Same idea as Beauvais (although I do think Halle can act... ). My only problem with Banks is that I feel she's still unproven as an actress.

Lieutenant Sulu - Big change, not only is Sulu not male, but also not human. Played by Chinese singing sensation Faye Hong, the Andorian Lt. Sulu provides us with a turly alien perspective. Her hair all done up like the Andorian from Avatar too
Different idea, but it's passable. Gives a little more of a true Federation feel to the Enterprise. I'm not sure we'd have to make the character female, though, a male Andorian would be just as good.

Lieutenant JG Data - Since Chekov was only brought in to try and boost ratings with the younger scene, I go with Data in this roll. But I want to recast with someone else as I feel Spiner has really gone too far with the character and has lost his sense of "wonder". Unfortunately I cannot think of anyone for the roll. I can't agree with the choice. Personally, Data was TNG's version of Spock, the alien who tried to understand humanity in an attempt to further understand himself (in Spock's case, because he is half-human, and in Data's case, because he was made in the image of humans). Having both on the show cheapens both characters.

Also, if you ignore the teen-scene reasonings behind Checkov, you uncover a young officer who (as we learn later in the movies) literally idolizes Kirk at this time in his life. Regardless if Checkov is male or female, there are gobs of writing possibilities as we see how the young officer matures with Kirk as his/her mentor (and if Checkov is female, how he reacts to her crush on and [occasional fawning over] him).

Also remember that Checkov and Sulu became good friends on board. ("Admit it, ve're lost." "Okay, we're lost, but we're making good time.") The fact that they spend time together away from their duties also makes for good writing opportunities (regardless of either character's gender).

Also, I'm not sure we have to radically change the Enterprise from it's TOS design...keep the original design, just simply update it so that it looks like an evolution from NX-01.

Too bad this will probably never see the light of day...

Dude, go back to the start of this thread.

No canon currently established applies, therefore how Enterprise NX-01 looks is of no concern.

The idea is a Utopian Star Trek series, from scratch taking the best of what you like and putting it all together

If no canon applies, then I certainly don't want the Enterprise to look like 1701-B. If we're going to go that route, let's use the sleek lines of the E-E as our basis.

But that's the most minor of concerns here. I think my responses on the characters were more important to the "show".
