    Lightbulb Preview!

You asked, and with Decipher's help, I delivered. I've placed online the first ever glimpse of the RPG off the main site. This two-page spread is from the archetype section of the Player's Guide.

More to come in the near future!

What the heck is that hanging from the Federation officer's chin? A soul patch? A caterpillar? A mutant life form?

From all the previous discussions, I'm really expecting the new rules to rock. But this first publicly displayed example of the art seems to me to be, well, a bit silly ...

Maybe all the members of N'Sync decided to join Starfleet after they got cut from Attack of the Clones ...

Way too cool! I'm putting this on my desktop... that, and I'm setting my Palm Pilot to remind me the second the Player's Guide comes out on the 24th...

    Oh my, yes.

Matt Colville once used the word "gamier" to describe the new difference between the new RPG and the old one. I think Keiran Yanner's art and the character displays demonstrate the "gaminess."

Species Abilities, Edges, all that. Man, oh man, this is the Trek game I always wanted.

Curse you, Don Mappin, now I won't get any sleep until at least April 24th!

I haven't gotten any sleep since they said it was coming "sometime this month."

Thanks Don, I appreciate the preview!

Just hope those black pages aren't easily marred by oily fingers...

    Giddy thanks

[EDIT: Please forgive my unattributed quotes.]

I haven't gotten any sleep since they said it was coming "sometime this month."
I'm sifting through every file in my Trek directory for old episode ideas. I think I'm going to be running Trek much more often, come May!

Thanks Don, I appreciate the preview!
I second that (in case cursing you, Don, somehow seemed to be something other than thanks).

And may I say that if characters are as easy to make as they seem to be by the character sheet (fewer skills, a simpler process of arriving at skill values, simple selections of Species, Professional and other abilities), I expect I'll be making a large supporting cast of NPCs for my series. At last!

Looks good, I'm guessing, since those are archetypes, that you do get a larger range of skills than that.

Could you elaborate a little about what sort of skill range and number of characters will have in comparison to the archetypes.

The artwork of the Klingon looks pretty sharp to me. Good stuff.

Many thanks for the preview Don. It's great to see this.

Actually, those characters are pretty much spot on for a starting character (i.e. no Advancements) with two exceptions.

    1) They do not include Species Skills. You are given a number of skill picks equal to your Intellect x 2 for skills that apply to your species (like Knowledge: Culture (Klingon), Language (Romulan), and Knowledge: Specific World (New Paris)).

    2) You are given five skill picks to use on the archetype. You can choose either to increase the number or the level of your skills.

Did anyone notice that the "Lt. j.g." is wearing four pips on his dress tunic?

    Otherwise, it looks niiiiice.

Hate to be the only detractor, looks a like a D&D3ed character layout. Also, too few skills for my taste, I realize you have other "picks" but that dosen't usually add too many new skills (could be wrong) from my experience.

Art has improved, but not by much. Gone from poor to comic book.

I will still give it a chance and take a real good look at it when it finally hits the streets, but from what I have seen thus far, ship templates and character archtypes, I was expecting more.

And before anyone says that nothing is stopping me using the old system...I know.

    Friends:

I have but one word to say:

    Goodie.

Seriously, though, this looks like its going to be far less of a hassle to make characters for CODA than it was for ICON (the system's sole weakness). Now, all I have to do is try to convince my gaming group to try it when it comes out.

What I'm REALLY looking forward to is starship combat. Space battles are my favorite aspect of space opera (Trek being no exception)...that and finally being able to play in the Movie Era. It's all about those Lowrider Enterprises (that includes the "-E")

    Kudos to the Decipher mob.
