    Question Monitor Resolution

As you may or may not be aware, I am developing a Starship designer for Spacedock (see Spacedock forum for info). I need to gauge the average resolution for the user so I can make the program as user friendly as possible.

    Thanks,

    Vaebn

Considering that most users are using 15-inch monitor, stick with 800x600.

Yeah, 800x600. While most of us can probably go higher, 800x600 would allow more people to use it, since those with higher Rez can always go down to 800x600.

Besides, the program will be mostly text, right? What advantage would higher REX really be?

wow, I never thought that there would be so many people using 800x600!

I thought 1024x768 became the standard resolution (and I think at least here in Germany it is)

Really? You must be selling 17-inch monitors (or laptop PCs with 17-inch screen) cheap there.

Either that or Germans have sharp, squinty eyes. Just kidding.

It is here in the US, too. At least among people who pay $200 for a brand new 15" or 17" monitor.

But among those of us who paid $35 for a used 14" monitor, 800x600 is fairly impressive.

Had to do my part to throw the poll off and cast my vote for 1280.

I feel all cramped at anything less than 1024. Guess I'm spoiled.

I remember when I decided to jump from 640x480 to 800x600. My mother started complaining about how all the solitaire cards were way too small all of a sudden.

After a while, she got used to 800x600. So when I started leaving the computer in 1024x769, she started to complain about how the solitaire cards were too small again, and asked if I could just leave the monitor alone.

All kidding aside, although I personally use high resolution... I know that a lot of people don't. When I'm at work, I'm using a Pentium 133 with a fairly cheap monitor. I get a headache if I use 1024x768, so I always leave it in 800x600. Or, if I'm just typing something, I go all the way down to 640x480 (gasp). So people really do use those resolutions.

One thing I can't stand is going to websites that say 'Optimized for Internet Explorer, 1024x768'. People who make webpages at high resolutions often times don't bother to check exactly how AWFUL they render at lower resolutions. That's why compatibility is very important for webpages and other computer programs.

I think you should maximize the accessibility of your product, and make it compatible with low resolutions.

You know, I have a 15" montiro here and a 17" at work and I keep both at 1024. Anything else is just too BIG!

THe main advantage of 800x600 is that a lot of older machines and laptops will be able to handle it. 1024x768 is nealry as compatable.

    And don't forget PDAs!
