The poll needs a "what's the big hoot anyway" option.

Fine. I'll make a decision. Cruiser.

I'm going to say Heavy Cruiser, Explorer is a more recent term in Trek- However, post refit I say a Command Cruiser (this explains why the Enterprise had more fleet and classified information in it's data banks for V'Ger to down load- the ship fell into the need to know department).

It was clear. Thing is, I understood exactly what it was all about, simply wasn't concerned about the end result...

Haven't they always been described as heavy cruisers?

The Constitution-Class is a Heavy Crusier because it is armed to the teeth. It is also an Explorer-class vessel as it has the scientific facilities to carry out that function. I guess that means I am in the "who gives a hoot" category. I have referred to it using both designations.

Always known it as a Heavy Cruiser. I like the Explorer designation, but it's a modern Trek one, and doesn't really fit TOS, IMHO

But I don't really care all that much

Well I have the "blueprints" made my Paramount when Star Trek the Motion Picture came out. (came with a cardboard mobile) and they list the USS Enterprise as an Enterprise Class Heavy Crusier.

(of course it also said it had a cloaking device but who's counting......)

Well, I guess I played too much SFB when I was a kid. It's a heavy cruiser. It had firepower and a few labs. More labs than a Klingon ship, well just about any ship has more labs than a Klingon ship.
I don't think the Constitution class rates being called an explorer, it's slow (by TNG standards) and has a short range (by TNG standards). The Galaxy class could go anywhere and not have to stop for any supplies. The crew could take shoreleave on the ship. You didn't have to stop for food, the replicator technology solved those problems. On a five years mission it could chart much more space than a Constitution class. The Explorer designation it made possible by 24th century technology.

    gee... was I rambling sorry.
