    Elite Profession Query

When you acquire an elite profession, do you get a free professional ability, or do you have to wait until your next advancement before acquiring any? What about the Starship Elite Professions, which you can start with?

Also, the Starship Duty prof ability says that it "substitutes for all of the prerequisites for entering that elite profession." But in the prerequisites for the various starship elite professions, Starship Duty is listed along with a number of skills, as normal for any elite profession. For example, the requirements for the Command Officer Starship EP are Starship Duty, Administration (parent organization) 4+, Persuade 3+, Systems Operation 2, and Willpower 1+. What does it mean by substituting for the requirements when it is one, and do you still need to acquire all the skills if you have Starship Duty?

    Thank ye.

It is my understanding that when you accquire an elite profession, you get one Tier 1 professional ability along with it.

There should be an "or" between Starship Duty and all the other prereqs.

Okay so I am enterng a new EP.

    I have Starship Duty.

I buy it again. What then?

What do I get from being in the new profession?

Can I spend my other 4 picks?

How many picks does Starship Duty cost?

Do I write down Starship Duty 2 now?

    Just asking

Keep in mind that I am not even remotely associated with the designers of Coda; I am just a person that has read the book and is fairly certain he understands it. Please correct me if I am wrong! Having said that...

Starship Duty costs three picks, just like any other professional ability.

When you buy it, you get a new elite profession from among the Starship EP's. This gives you a Tier 1 Professional ability and a bunch of new skills that are considered Professional. You don't actually GET those skills, you just are now entitled to a cost break on purchasing levels for them.

I would rule that you can indeed spend your 2 remaining picks.

You write down each Starship Duty separatley like this:

    Starship Duty (Flight Control)
    Starship Duty (Command Officer)
Starship Duty (Chief Cook and Bottle Washer)

    and so forth.

(ok, lets see a Starship Chief Cook and Bottle Washer EP now )

The prevailing wisdom thus far supports Allen's interpretation. However, it has been noted that the remaining two picks should be spent on skills and such pertaining to the new elite profession.

Remebeer- the first Starship Duty ability is Free during character creation.

As for taking ti later- keep in mind the 2 active profession limit. So someone who transfers from one branch to another is going to have to give up either thier other elite profession or Starship Officer in order tob e able to select from the new profession.

I'm guessing you would go into 'special forces' EP for the RRT guys.
"War is an ugly thing but not the ugliest of things; the decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feelings which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. A man who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself."

Possibly. Since professions are much looser than classes there are other options too.

RRT characters could just as easily take professions like security engineering, operations, medical, envoy, smuggler or explorer. It all depends of the character's field of expertise. RRT's would need a mix of skills and abilties-Demo expert, Field medic, commo specialist, scout, sniper. Practically any game profession could translate into a RRT specialty.

Historically, some of the most effective special forces operations invloving winning the trust ofthe local people, something that would make the envoy profession very useful.

Lots of different ways to go.
