    How would you?

One of my players wants to play a doctor. As the game is going to be set on a space station, she can be a civilian doctor, instead of Starfleet.

How would you go about making one? I was thinking Scientist, but the Professional Abilites or Elite Professions really don't work.

    Any ideas gang?

Scientist could work, but why not take the Starfleet "military" skills out of the package and replace with skills and abilities you think a civie Doctor would pick up.

Of course I make this suggestion blind, don't have the new book.

Scientists looks good. About the only problem I can see is that Medicine is not considered a Science in CODA, affecting some of the professional abilties.

I suggest going with scientists, but allowing the player to modify some of the professional abilties (like the Tier 1 ability: Area of Expertise) to allow the selection of Medicine instead of Science.

Later on, the character should probably take the Starship Medical Officer elite profession. Keep in mind that Starship Medical Officer reflects no only starfleet characters, but doctors who serve aboard a starship (or space station)--just like the character.

    Making a Doctor

There is a professional development package on page 92 under "Scientist" called "Doctor". I think this works just fine. Considering the biology classes and what not doctors have to take before they even get to medical school, having it be part of the Scientist career makes sense to me.

Scientist would be the way to go. First Aid and Medicine are Professional Skills and, as Allen pointed out, one of the Scientist's Professional Development packages is "Medical Doctor".

I had that in mind when I recently made a medical officer NPC for my series. He's a more mature Vulcan (89 years old), who was an accomplished Vulcan Healer prior to the Dominion War, when he volunteered for Starfleet to provide his medical services where they were needed. On the sheet, I listed his Profession as "Scientist (Starship Medical Officer)".
