Im planning a TOS game where the players play the Bridge crew of a Constitution class starship. The game has an underlying story-arc that's still very vague, which is what i need some help with.
The basic idea consists of a mystery: what happened to the Enterprise? The ship was found derelict and abandoned (somewhere important, perhaps the Romulan Neutral Zone); even the ship that discovered it has woundup the same way. The players will ocme across this mystery by locating the latter's log buoy.
Essentially each 'chapter' oif the story will feature the discovery of one member of the Enterprise crew, ostensibly starting with the less popular crew members before building up to the Kirk himself.
Only problem is i cant think what the hell is going on! I want it to have something to do with a strong moral idea, that being the treatment of these characters as legends and icons of the Fleet. This idea starts to transcend the nature of the game as well so hopefully it can make the players think.
Start the campaign. Be real sneaky, keep everything real close to the vest giving minimal information than can be interpreted in various ways, and listen to the ideas the players come up with. Steal the best one. Modify it slightly, and let fly.
The PCs feel better about gleaning the correct plot, and you don't have to do so much work.
OK, for real ideas.
If you're running concurrent with TOS, rather than the movies, there could be some sort of Tholian Incursion, which is causing the crew of the Enterprise to vanish into subspace. Fall out from the Defiant adventure.
You could have this be the first contact with the Sheliak, since nobody knows much about them.
Some sort of Subspace hole, or subspace creature that has taken the crew of the E for some sort of study. It returns them as it finishes studying the crewmembers. The most important ones are kept the longest because they have more information. Depending on where you go with it, it could be a precursor to an invasion or just a misunderstanding along the lines of "I didn't know you guys were sentient".
It could be Advanced Humans from the 43rd century coming back to study the E and it's effect on history.
It could be a Mirror Universe thing, where the bad guys could be trying to wipe out the best defenders of the Federation.
Hope this helps.

Kirk was supposed to be the first captain to succesfully complete the five-year mission; thats what mades him famous in starfleet's eyes, and why they quickly promoted him to Admiral.
He becomes a legend in the future, although its pretty clear that he's already a standout in TOS (he's the hero after all ).
Thus i have decided that a figure from that future has travelled back in time to disrupt this future out some sense of vengeance or emnity. Whether this figure is someone already established in canon is undecided.
What is important is that this game is ultimnately a TOS game, using a figure from the future is just a plot device to be handled in that fashion. Consequently I wont be using concepts that were only introduced in TNG onwards (such as Bussard Collectors and Warp Coils - even though they ovbviously exist, they arent part of the TOS continuum).
