Cool Ice reservoirs found on Mars

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/sci...00/2009318.stm

Where there's ice, there's water right? And where there's water...

Just adding more fuel to the fire I suppose.

Saw that this morning. Sounds like the reasons for not going are getting knocked down.
"War is an ugly thing but not the ugliest of things; the decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feelings which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. A man who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself."

I walked into work and saw this, turned to one of the news announcers and said "Do we have this story in our package?" She said no, I sent her the link and now we do.

    The Mars Polar Lander was
    to touch down in exactly
the right spot in 1999 and
    would have undoubtedly
detected the ice had it not
    malfunctioned on the way
    down.
    Hmm... now that's interesting.

So what does that have to do with my tax money, which may be spent on such Mars expedition?

Let some private organization do it. The US government should give them a tax break should they take on this endeavor.

Amen to that Steve! I'll take Edgar Rice Burroughs' version over Carl Sagan's any ol' day. I want Tars Tarkas on my payroll!

    OK, so that's way cool.

Now all we need is a nice international mission to Mars

While I can see your point about the tax money, can you imagine what sort of Starfleet that would lead us to?

Yeah, I know, but you imagine Starfleet with that attitude?

Everybody running around in suit and tie and having titles like 'Vice president in charge of the R&D department' and dialogues like:
"CEO, sir. Why don't we take a closer look at this planet."
"Because there is nothing down there that could possibly increase our shreholder value."

And all the Vulcans would be accountants or lawyers.
