The starship combat system given here is not a tactical simulation in any way. Nor does it try to be. It is meant as an extension of the RPG itself. While not as abstract as other space combat systems, it isn't meant to be used with miniatures or coutners on a map or grid.
So I guess the answer would be, you really don't need a grid.
