    Plasma Torpedo "Interim" Stats

Don indicated that complete information on plasma torpedoes will be in the Starships book later in the year, but I just knew there were Romulan fans out there, so I reverse-engineered the warbird stats from the NG to estimate what the offense values and space costs for the "Type V" plasma torpedo might be, and then made some guesses on Types I-IV.

I estimated space costs based on what it would cost to build up a similar offense value with a "conventional" missile weapon, so they are high; this is consistent with the BoP in "Balance of Terror," which if it did have space left for disruptors never actually used them against the Enterprise. The warbird in the NG seems to be working from the same principle; either that or it has quite a bit of unspent leftover space.

When calculating penetration for plasma torpedoes, use the offense values to determine what the point-blank penetration is as per Table 9.12 in the NG; then reduce penetration by 1 for each lower range category (yes, this can leave ships with single Type I and II plasma torpedo systems with no offensive power at longer ranges...but that's the price of ridiculous penetration at close range compared to ships of similar era with conventional missile weapons!)

I have no availability dates in mind for these, except that the Type III (the model I have in mind for the TOS bird of prey) must be available in or before 2266, and the Type V perhaps not until as late as 2360.

Size minimums are all my fault; change them at will.

Type I: Cost 5; Offense Value 7; Minimum Size 2
Type II: Cost 8; Offense Value 12; Minimum Size 3
Type III: Cost 14; Offense Value 20; Minimum Size 4
Type IV: Cost 21; Offense Value 30; Minimum Size 5
Type V: Cost 28; Offense Value 40; Minimum Size 6

This may, at least, keep somebody happy until the official story is told. Or not.

It is by caffeine alone I set my mind in motion. It is by the juice of java that thoughts acquire speed, the hands acquire shaking, the shaking becomes a warning. It is by caffeine alone I set my mind in motion.

    Plasma Torps Alternative

Here is my take on the Romulan plasma torpedo. Availability dates are based on what I've extrapolated from the FASA Romulan SRM (yeah, yeah, I know, it's not a very reliable source, but at least they have dates... ). The earliest plasma weapon I could find equated to about a 2257 launch. I can't recall if there's any canon information about plasma torpedoes before the TOS era.

Type - Cost - Off. Value - Min. Size - Avail.
    I ----- 4 ------ 5 ---------- 4 ------ 2257
    II ---- 7 ------ 10 --------- 5 ------ 2265
    III --- 14 ----- 20 --------- 6 ------ 2291
    IV ---- 21 ----- 30 --------- 4 ------ 2312
    V ----- 27 ----- 40 --------- 6 ------ 2360

Penetration value for the first range increment is determined by the torpedoe's offensive value. For every range increment beyond the first, reduce penetration by one point (i.e., first penetration number is 4, then the weapon's penetration is 4/3/2/1/0).

Edited, based on Doug's response to the "Heavy Warbird" issue (i.e., that the D'Deridex is just a battleship, and not considered a "heavy" vessel). Second edit reverses the minimum size for Types I-III. If I didn't, I couldn't fit the plasma torpedoes on the V-8 Bird of Prey!

Edited and bumped. Note that as with Erik's version of the plasma weapon, I'm basing this on assumptions made from just a single example.

    Enjoy!

Sounds about right based off of the D'Deridex .
"War is an ugly thing but not the ugliest of things; the decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feelings which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. A man who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself."

These look pretty good. I don't have the "real" ones in front of me now, but those look pretty close. The main purpose of the plasma torpedo is, of course, get as close as you can and let the enemy have it. The lack of any splash damage gives a large tactical advantage to the Romulan that's able to get close enough, removing the threat of the opposing vessel's own missile weapons.
