The Makin Class was the first true purpose armored transport built by Starfleet, before this ground force transport was usually handled by various freighters and other ships temporarily assigned on a mission to mission bases. When it entered service in 2274 it had the ability to fully transport a full Ground Force Expeditionary Unit and its supporting elements which consisted of: 1x Headquarters Company, 4 Rifle companies, 1x Mechanized Company, 1x Artillery Battery, 1x mix shuttle squadron and 1 x Service Support Company in all nearly 1,800 personnel.

Each Makin Class transport is also assigned two or three Transport Craft, Utility to aid in off loading its GFEU.

As yu can tell I moved away from the combat transporter theroy of warfare of FASA by adding the larger shuttlecraft assortment possibilities. Further I came up with the Transport Craft, Untility ir TCU.

    Transport Craft, Utility
    Production Data
    Origin: United Federation of Planets
    Class and Type: Generic
    Year Launched: n/a

    Hull Data
Structure: 12 (5 Spaces Left Unused)
    Size/Decks: 2/1
    Length/height/Beam: 41 / 7.8 / 9 meters
    Compliment: 10 (400 SGF Personnel)

    Operations Data
    Atmospheric capable
    Cargo Units: 2+8
    Sensor Systems: Basic
    Operations Systems: Class 2 (C)
Life Support Systems: Class 2 (C)

    Propulsion Data
Warp Systems: Type II (Warp 2/4/5) (B)
    Impulse Systems: Type I: (.25c) (E)

    Tactical Data
    Deflector Shield: Class 2 (A)
    Protection/Threshold: 12 1/2

    Miscellaneous Data
    Maneuver Modifier: -1 C / +2 H / -1T

Many make the mistake of assuming that the Transport Craft, Utility (TCU) is a shuttlecraft, it is not, it is a full transport in and of itself complete with basic sensor, life and operations systems and is capable of warp speeds. In most cases a transport will off load a TCU well out of the space of the targeted system allowing the TCU’s own propulsion systems to propel it in to the system. TCU’s entered Starfleet service shortly after the Four Years War and have continued to see service well into the 24th Century.

    Good interpretation!

I like the TCU idea, it makes a lot of sense. FASA's idea of a combat vessel transporting marines aboard an enemy vessel really don't make sense! It would have to drop its own shields to do so, and that's inviting trouble from anywhere still "hot" (i.e. most places where you'd want to put marines!).

A "drop shuttle" makes much more sense - now we just need an APT/tank to go with it (preferably with a turret on rails - guess which movie was on the tv the other night ).
