BACKGROUND: The Sentinel class was designed to be a cruiser-sized partner to the Defiant-class Heavy Escort. Production delays caused by the Breen attack on the Sol System resulted in only one ship being finished before the end of the Dominion War, the class ship U.S.S. Sentinel, NCC-99724. Shortly thereafter, funding for the class was cut when opponents of a more militant Starfleet were able to persuade the Council that the ship was not needed. As the Sentinel had already been commissioned, Starfleet decided to keep it in service and has assigned it a mission to patrol the reestablished Demilitarized Zone.

NOTE; I am not an artist; I see this ship as resembling the Defiant but also with some things reminiscent of the Sovereign class. Anyone care to take a shot at drawing it?

Looks good (If a bit millitant for my tastes) - but shouldn't you add up all the phaser banks together?

That I am real, I'm not something you invented,
That I'm not everything you want me to be.'

I felt that since they were basically separate weapons systems, they should be statted separatley. In practice the pulse phasers are used against seriously dangerous opponents, and the Type X Phasers are used in most other situations; they COULD be used together, but with only one Tactical Officer, this of course requires multiple attacks, so most of the time that would not happen.

Yes, it is militant; that's one of the story points. The crew is officially on an exploration mission but this ship is a warship; they don't have the crew comforts you would find on a Sovereign, fort example. This is kind of intended to mirror the conflict going on in the Federation after the war, with forces pulling in one direction (to maintain Starfleet's emphasis on scientific exploration) and others pulling in another (being better prepared for defense, since the Federation almost lost the war from the hawks' viewpoint). Unofficially, Starfleet is concerned about the instability of the Cardassian Union and (in my campaign) a large number of now-independent worlds cut loose by the Cardassians because they can't control them now due to loss of forces. So, they're kind of putting the Sentinel out there as a way of saying "Starfleet still has some teeth". This doesn't sit well with many of the crew, I might add...which is where some of the conflict in the campaign comes from

After seeing the ship in action for the first time this Friday, I decided to make some changes; I removed the Type X Phasers and added one pulse phaser; this changes the penetration to 6/6/6/0/0/. I changed the shields to 17/4, and brought the structure up to 40.
