You have to copy and paste the pips into a directory on your drive. Then, in Excel, click in the cell and go up to the menu: go "Insert" -> "Picture" -> "From File", then navigate your directory structure to find the images. Once you get one on the page, you can copy and paste as normal and it seems to fit into the cell.

Why it won't do that when you copy and paste from the ones on the worksheet, I have no idea (hey, and I'm teaching Excel to Tech College students!!! - whoops!)

In my "Version 1.1", I'll be including instructions for this - it should be ready in a week or so (I've just started back at Uni this week, and I'm pretty much snowed under).

I'm also working on the stand-alone application "RosterGen 1.0" which will do all this stuff without needing Excel (plus a few extras). I've got the basic engine going, but I need to start adding the bells & whistles (which are the time consumers). Hopefully that should be ready by about the end of March.

All of which leads to the ultimate question: Can Aldaron write a short post??

    Thanks!

By the way, do you intend to make a Mac version of the RosterGen?

    Mac? MAC?
    Me do a Mac version??

I've never sat in front of a Mac, I'm afraid! Apart from which, I'm flat out doing a Windows version - I wouldn't even know where to start with a Mac!

I'm more than happy, however, to share the source code when it's finished - so if there's someone out there with VB for Macs, they could pretty easily convert it.

Got the basic engine finished, btw. It generates species, branch & dept for a user-entered number of crew and writes it to a text file. Still brushing up on using dialog controls in VB (been 2 years since I last used VB!) so I can get a user friendly save/load system going, and I've got to implement the insertion of ranks and specialties, not to mention getting it to work for different ship types (Explorer, Cruiser, etc) - but at least it's underway!

    Will keep everyone posted...

Will your program allow people to tweak the racial percentages and also include or exclude races?

    Yeah, probably.
I haven't figured that bit out yet - I'm still working on having the percentages hard-coded, but that's just for the prototype I have now. Later on, I'll probably change it to allow this, though it won't be particularly easy to do...

    Hey man

I have been playing around with your spreadsheet and I find it to be a god send, but just one thing. No matter what kind of ship I pick, my Ops department always comes up as 0 crew. Anyone else have this problem with it?

Is there a patch or a fix for this problem?

Let me know as this is a wonderful tool and I would love to see it continued.

    Aslan...
Hmmm...sounds like I might have sent you the wrong file!

I created 2 versions of the spreadsheet - one "approved" for general use, and one personalised for my own campaign. I personally don't use an "Ops" department in my crew rosters. IMC, all engineering and security personnel are considered Operations department personnel. The actual Ops position (ala Data) is a job description, not a department.

Taking the Enterprise as an example, it goes like this (hope the formatting works):

    Picard (CO - Cmd)
    |
Riker (2IC - Cmd Dept Head)
    |
Data (3IC - Ops Dept Head)
    |
    ----------------------
    | |
    LaForge Worf
    (CEO) (CSO)

Now, beneath LaForge, there are dozens of specialties (Warp Core Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Diagnostics, etc), including a specialty called Mission Operations, which is often abbreviated to "Ops".

So, in summary: Data is the 2nd officer and the Chief of the Operations department (ie: he is Geordi's boss). He is also an Engineering officer, with a Mission Operations specialty.

I find this neatly eliminates the problems of:
    1) Having 200 Operations officers running around who don't seem to do much other than sit in the "left-hand-seat" on the bridge;

    2) Having people like Robin Lefler referred to in the show as "Mission Specialist" (which sounds a lot like Mission Operations to me) while still working in main engineering; and...

    3) Why Geordi kept sitting at the Ops position on the E-E bridge during Insurrection.

One thing I still haven't figured out yet is why the Ops and Conn positions on the E-E switched between First Contact and Insurrection. In FC Hawke was on the right, and Data on the left, as tradition holds. During INS, however, Lt Perim (? - The cute Trill, anyway), in command Red, was on the left and Geordi kept sitting on the right.

    Go figure...

Anyway - that's the (incredibly long-winded) answer, Aslan!
I'll have the "updated" versions of the spreadsheet posted in the Computer Core soon. The application to do it is on hold at present - I simply have no time to work on it; I'm flat out learning Java and C++ (in order to pass my end of semester exams!) without having to relearn VB again as well! Hopefully, in the next couple of months, I'll be able to get back onto it!.

Thanks to all for your forebearance!

Aldaron, could you mail me one of those spreadsheets? I'm just sitting here and trying to figure out the crew positions for our new ship and it could be really helpfull
If you're willing to help me with this I would prefer the version without the ops department - that's exactly how we do it in our campaign.
And I always thought nobody else did it this way!

Finally! I've finally sent the thing off to submissions, guys!
Sorry about the delays - hopefully it'll be in the Computer Core at the next update.

Indeed. Is there any chance you could e-mail me the correct one?

I think it is a terrific tool and would love to get my hands on the proper one ASAP

I have a Nebula class crew to design.

    Thumbs up

The crew roster generator is now online in the Computer Core (Software section). Here's a link:

I've read how I have to save the rank insignia as a separate file so I can paste them in... However, showing my total ignorance, how do I save the individual insignia as sepratate files?

    Dan -
You can only do it by creating a directory and opening it up as a window. Then copy and paste the individual insignia files in. There's no shorter way of doing it, mainly because I didn't want Steve Marriott's images being used "willy-nilly" - he gave me the okay for me to use them in the spreadsheet, not distribute them as a single file.
If you want that, go to the TangoFleet website (the location's in the spreadsheet) and go thru the motions, which involves downloading a zip file of all the insignia and emailing Steve for a password to open the zip file.
