Thanks for the civics lesson, guys. And another Happy Canada Day to you all up north!

So, do you guys take the day off and shoot fireworks illegally within city limits?

I wonder how different the US would have been had the revolution not been successful.
There's a lot of SF speculation that's been done on an unsuccessful American Revolution.

I, on the other hand, wonder how different things might be if the US's invasion of Canada had been successful during the War of 1812.

Well, I guess you would have a more direct route to Alaska.

Bleah. If you have to struggle to get something, it's more important and precious to you than if you have it handed to you.

And besides, if you're an independent country, what is the queen of another country's face doing on your money? Why are the mounties "Royal?" Why do your ship prefixes still say "HMS"???

    1. They are part of a commonwealth of sovereign nations. C'mon, HM Queen Elizabeth II barely has governmental power in her own nation, let alone in any of Britain's former colonies. She's just head of state. The US seems to be the exception, rather than the rule, in that our head of state (the President) is also our head of government. Most European nations that I've read up on separate those two positions, even ones without reigning monarchs.

    2. And Canadian ships are designated HMCS, not HMS.

C'mon, we pledge allegiance to a flag, for crying out loud.
