What does Canada Day celebrate, specifically? Besides Canada (duh!)

    It's like your July 4th.
Except nobody fought and killed anybody, so it doesn't mean quite as much.

So its when Britain gave up direct rule and let Canada govern themselves?

    What year was this?

Australia being in the same position only got self rule in 1901.

I seem to remember that Canada gained its independence some time in the 1960s. '64 maybe?

    Happy belated Canada Day, btw.

Close Sea Tyger... but off by a century.

1867 was the date of Canadian Confederation

If anyone wants to know about Canada (some Canadians could use this info as well ) Go to this site...

I found it to be a good overview of Canadian history. Not indepth, but good coverage.

Ah! Very interesting reading. I wonder how different the US would have been had the revolution not been successful.

So, if I read correctly, Canada was a self-governed "dominion" of the United Kingdom from 1867-1931, when they gained their sovereignty in the "British Commonwealth of Nations"?
