    French data

    Hi,

I'm adding my two cents'worth for France (I haven't read all the thread so I apologise if the info has been provided already).

What kind of cars are sold where you live and who makes them?

The major French brands are Peugeot, Renault, Citroen. The sell family cars as well as equipment (for Renault). We also have foreign cars, be they Fiat, Honda, Daewoo, Mercedes, BMW, Rover... The exception is american cars, we have almost none.

Do you know who owns that company?

    No idea.

How about trucks, heavy equipment, motorcycles, ocean-going ships, trains, airplanes, or helicotpers?

Renault manufactures trucks and equipment. For motorcycles, it's the same, we have lots of foreign brands - almost no French brands. Planes are manufactured by Dassault (military) and Airbus (civilian), as well as by foreign companies (McDonnell Douglas especially). Trains are owned by the state, and they are designed by a variety of companies (I've seen Siemens - which is German, BTW). Helicopters? No clue.

What TV channels/networks can you watch? Do you know who owns them or which other channels are owned by the same company?

    For the regular hertzian network:
TF1 (private owned by Bouygues, a transnational that first activity was building). Generalist channel, with a knack for reality shows and low-rate series from everywhere (the only notable series they have are Angel and CSI).
    France 2 & 3 (state-owned): F2 is sort of TF1 - lite, F3 is more cultural and has a regional network.
    La cinquieme (state-owned): Cultural channel.
Arte (state-owned?): French / German endeavour, cultural channel a bit underground because has a very high level.
Canal+ (private owned by Vivendi corporation): paying channel (it's encrypted most of the time). Specializes in movies (the first TV broadcasting of movies usually occurs there), sport, and has a very special spirit, a bit provocative, "avant-garde".
M6 (private-owned): Main competitor of TF1, is even more gross in reality shows, but has higher standards for series (they have the French versions of Buffy, Stargate SG1, Highlander...)

On the satellite, there are far more. For example:
Canal Jimmy: Series and documentaries about the 70s - 80s. The only channel broadcasting Star Trek!!!!
Serie Club: Specialized in series, old (Space 1999, The Prisoner...) and new (Buffy)
    Planete: Documentaries
Manga: Only japanimation (mostly from the 80s, which is quite fun to watch for nostalgia's sake)

What are the major corporations in your country? What do they do?

The biggest is Vivendi-Universal, which do about everything.

Do you have any notions of likely changes in the near future?

I think the biggest changes to come will be political - we have the same majority at both legal and executive powers (which had become quite uncommon). The left wing is shattered, the right wing has the power. I think security will be tightened (it's about time) and that there will be some encouraging measures towards companies and salaries to help the consumers and the economy.

That's just my opinion of course, I have no pretention as an oracle

Peugeot and Citroen are in fact the same company: PSA. As a matter of fact, they use the same platform quite often. Peugeot cars are usually built more like sport cars, but the basis is often the same.
As for Renault, AFAIR, it is only partly owned by the French state ... and it in turn owns Nissan (or a big part of it) since ... not sure, a few years I believe, which makes it a much bigger company than meets the eye.

Airbus is actually "Airbus Industry" AFAIR owned by EADS ... it's a British-French-German-Italian(or is it Spanish?) aeronautics consortium I think. From what I've heard/seen, Airbus planes have been progressively replacing older planes like DC10 or Boeing749 in Air France's fleet.
EADS also makes the Eurofighter ... competitor to the Rafale from Dassault ... apparently, the Eurofighter is not nearly as good as the Rafale, but not as expensive either .

Trains are owned by the state, and they are designed by a variety of companies (I've seen Siemens - which is German, BTW). Helicopters? No clue.
Most of the trains are indeed owned by SNCF, which is indeed a state company. However, a big part of those trains are made by Alsthom I believe. The 6 or 7 versions of TGVs, the new regional trains, and part of the subways. Alsthom is ... errr ... French or Swiss ... some French speaking country I think anyway .
Helicopters are made by Eurocopter, which now belongs to EADS too AFAIR. They make civilian as well as military helicopters, among which the Tiger attack helicopter (one of the few helicopters that can make a real ... damn, how do you call that ... those acrobatic figures where the aircraft ends up upside down ... no idea how that'd help a helicopter fighter pilot though ... it does most of the things the Apache does too ).

What TV channels/networks can you watch? Do you know who owns them or which other channels are owned by the same company?

    {snip ... KW pretty much said it all}

What are the major corporations in your country? What do they do?

The biggest is Vivendi-Universal, which does about everything.
Including getting busted for trying to manipulate its data for the stock exchange or something .
There are also some really big corporations in the food sector ... things like Danone, Nestle, etc.
The telecom business sprouted it's share of corporations (France Telecom - Orange (state), SFR (Vivendi, right?), and Bouygues (t's a small world isn't it?)), but some are bound to go down sooner or later with the IT crisis ... I suppose there can be only one ... or two .

An invitation to rant? Usually my girlfriend just rolls her eyes and ignores me

Anyway, that was my rant. I dislike the BBC, and their attitude towards anyone who doesn't like Sports, Eastenders, or 'homegrown' drama. And I absolutely resent being charged a yearly license fee for the honour of having paid for and owning my own TV.

Thumbs up C5, you're the best

Thanks C5 for correcting my mistakes...

IIRC, Renault has a strange status: they are private-owned, yet work as a capitalist firm (or maybe my info is outdated )
They still own Nissan, IIRC. Renault has lots of different sectors, actually - they even owned (still own?) hotels in South America!

    SFR (Vivendi, right?)
    Right!

Erm... KillerWhale... as much as I like to be praised (especially when I've done nothing to deserve it ), I have to point out that Calcoran should be the one to thank IMHO...
    But you're welcome anyway
