Oh I agree the Klingons are still a threat (indeed, see the link I put up above). I probably should have expressed myself a little better.

In TOS, when you add a Klingon cruiser, it is a good way too immediately let the players know the bad guy is here. Ditto in TNG with the Cardassians. Post Star Trek-VI, you don't know what the arrival of a Klingon ship means. Which is often a good thing, but sometimes it's nice to have the Trek equivalent of the Evil Galactic Empire popping in for a visit.

It would be intriguing to no how large the Federation is in this time and how many ships fly the space lanes. Plus the number of members etc.

Perhaps a map or two is in order

I have been running an Enterprise-B PBEM series for almost a year, based on events after the failed maiden voyage, after Kirk vanished, using the LUGTrek system and now transfered over to the new CODA rules. And you're right, there are a lot of opportunities for adventures in this era--Post Klingon Empire, Renegade Klingons, Romulans, even Section 31, who can be a great antagonizer, which where the game is now Section 31 can be used as a great adversary to the new alliance between the Federation and the Klingons

Not that Romulans aren't a problem... However, the Neutral Zone separates the two powers
Yes the Romulans are no prob, because they isolate themselves from all other Species!!!!!

Starfleet switches from phaser banks to arrays around 2322, when the Ambassador-Class is first produced. The TNG warp scale may come in then as well. The Tomed Incident was about 50 years prior to "The Neutral Zone" on TNG, so ~2310-15. LUG would suggest they were fighting the Taur'hai during this period.

There is a very good timeline for technical and political developments in the forthcoming TOS supplement for Spacedock by the esteemed Steve Long, but I don't have the testread version on me right now.

Been thinking about this era for the game I'm going to start up. It occurred to me that the galaxy-wide conspiracy revealed in STVI:Undiscovered Country would have some rather long-lasting and far-reaching after-effects. I'm imagining an atmosphere not unlike what we had here in the US after the Watergate revelations and the Nixon resignation. Of course, all that was on the heels of Vietnam and the counter-culture movement, although I don't see a parallel for those in this ST era. Regardless, I can imagine a pretty big shake-up in StarFleet, in the Federation, in the other governments who had members involved in the conspiracy. Lots of accusations, hearings, careers ruined, careers made, a batch of disillusioned cadets coming out of the Academy, new regulations, distrust of "The System", some paranoia (who do you trust?). What did Section 31 know and when did they know it?
    I'll end there. Any thoughts?

Don't forget that the Klingons were at war with the Cardassians for 15 years around the turn of the century.

Plenty of opportunity for the players to get stuck in the middle of that.
