Trials and tribulations of the Odyssey

Okay I've got it. The transwarp drive is still a bit of a mystery. They built it with scavanged parts and with tech and theories that only a few people can barely begin to comprehend. This highly experimental and theoretical piece of propulsion technology unfortunately has an effect on its own sub-space field leading to creations of time-space oddities everytime they use the transwarp drive for more than a micro-jump of 500 light years (or something, I'll work out the figures later) so when they leaped all the way from the Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards to DS12 they caused a minor disruption in the time space continuum and for a micro-second actually changed places with a more advanced version of the Odyssey from a parallel dimension where all Starfleet vessels have sentient computers based on 'ancient technology of a race that had destroyed itself by trying to meld themselves into machines' .

However, when time rights itself the sentient computer has changed places with its more mundane counterpart. The crew don't notice the problem until the ship starts upgrading itself (in borg-like fashion - red herring city) and when the ship's computer actually back chats the CO.

That as they say is that. Comments.

This actually reminds me of the infamous episode Treshold... only this time, instead of having the crew evolve (or devolve, I always wondered about that part ), this would be the tech... quite interesting.
This could start with what would look like malfunctions, until the crew realised it seems to be making some systems more efficient... until the computer starts explaining them what happens

Just have one or two nanites come over from the switch, and set about "fixing" the ship, including the computer core

Hmm...a couple of nanites might take too long to rebuild the computer core and affect the ship within the time frame I want...I want it to happen quickly, the have random systems shut down and come back on line more efficient than before. Now if only the damn thing will fix the transwarp drive - which it can't, don't ask why...

I like the idea of a "forward deployed" temporary base. It would have great atmosphere: spartan, unfinished, uncomfortable.

I don't like the idea of a new ship class as much. Why would Starfleet build that class instead of Defiants? In my campaign I'm going to slip Defiant's engines down one step and replace the pulse-phasers with equivelent standard phasers. That solves the over-powered engine problem. If you're going to have a new ship you need to explain why Starfleet went to the trouble.

Same with the NX-series Intrepid. Why is it assigned as the "big" ship here, when it isn't working at 100%?

You can do these things, just come up with a reason.

Not as spartan as you think but lots of bits are jerry-rigged (especially the connections to the mission pods) so they have a tendency to short out once in a while.

Okay, the Scott class is a smaller version of the Defiant, built for more limited patrols and reconassiance. Basically its a runabout with starship grade engines and weaponry. Its basic design was the result of catastrophic ship losses during the Dominion War.Starfleet needed ships for local patrols and hte Scott-class was it. Its basically a way to put ships into service quickly at lower costs. It carries a crew of 12, CO, Ops, helm, tactical, 3 engineers, 1 medic, a loadmaster/crew chief and 2 auxiliary fire control/sensor technicians. Its basically a 'gunboat' designed for patrol actions against lightly armed opponents not warships. Remember hte mission is peacekeeping and deploying even a single Defiant would seem like a escalation.

Same with the NX-series Intrepid. Why is it assigned as the "big" ship here, when it isn't working at 100%?
Its all supposed to happen in the Pilot. The original assigned ship Durandel gets wasted by the Space Ameoba about mid-way through the episode. The Odyssey is being tested near Earth and the CO takes it on himself to use the transwarp drive to get his ship to DS 12 in a real hurry to wipe out the space ameoba.

Why is it there when its not working at 100%? Basically because the ship has problems going transwarp, anything less than warp 9.9999 is fine. So the Odyssey is for all intents and purposes a fully functional Intrepid. Initially, its ordered to stay on station until Starfleet can scrounge up a replacement for the Durandel, unfortunately, it just doesn't come through due to the usual bottlenecks and the usual excuse, 'we need the ships elsewhere and since Odyssey's already there, we can deploy this ship to somewhere where we don't have a ship..'

In the long run, the transwarp drive will get fixed. Part of the plot is in "Infestation" and I think I can only keep the transwarp engine out of service only for so long.

You can do these things, just come up with a reason.
I think these are fairly rational reasons. My players accept them.

And that is all that matters Ghosty.

More than one I have seen ideas shot down here by various sources, but so long as the players that are going through it enjoy it, that is all that matters

I mean for my money I would do things differently than you, but that's what allows for our diversity and whatmakes these boards so good. The duifference of opinions and the fact that no one person's take on Trek or plot flow (or elements) is the "right one".

Personally, I think Ghosty's campaign background is one of the best thought out i've read in a long while.

Ghosty, I think your players are in for a treat..
