I hope I am not offending anyone with this post, but I am coming from a position of blessed ignorance, but what do you actually used deckplans for in games? My gaming groups have always just acted on "go to Engineering", "go to Sickbay", and the like.
Do you fight corridor to corridor actions? Do you need to know where Section A is in relation to Section C for running the ship?
I really am curious.
It helps you get into the feeling of the game.
I am so offended! How could you say such a horrible thing!Originally posted by Ramage

(Just kidding...)
Seriously, I believe it's a matter of personal taste. The players in my game generally could care less about complete deckplans but their narrator really likes having a map of the ship they are in - helps him narrate the game.
I tend to set my games on "canon" ships - i.e. Defiant, Galaxy, Bird of Prey, etc. Helps me describe the setting better. Everyone knows what Ten-Forward looks like, what's the lounge on an Akira look like?

I have three deckplans for Star Trek. One is the Talon-Class Scout-Ship, another for the Saber-Class and one for the Nova-Class. There is one for Star Wars as well.

Does anyone have the deckplans for the D'Deridex class warbird?
This is my first post here by the way. I'm glad that there is a place for Trekkers to share ideas freely.

The only Romulan plans I know of are for a TV-era Bird of Prey (you can find it at conventions) and for a courier (similar to a Starfleet Runabout, as seen in "In the Pale Moonlight) at Dan Gurden's website:

I don't use deckplans much in games, I just love to spread them out over the floor and look at them.
I can think of two occasions I used plans in games. First to illustrate where abody was found abourd the Defiant -class USS Thunderchild and second to illustrate the weapons pod and the access to it on a Miranda-class ship.
I have ordered personalised plans of the USS Boudicea, aMiranda-class ship, for my Dominion campaign. Just because it will be a cool memento.

I used the old TOS Constitution-class deckplans in the first ST game I ran. The TNG era characters found a derelict Constitution and decided to investigate. They called up the schematics on their runabout's library computer and made their way from the shuttlebay to the bridge. As they pointed out which corridors they were taking, I told them what they found and what happened to them.
It was almost like a D&D dungeon crawl, but with a ST style mystery to puzzle out. I found the deckplans helpful in planning what encounters and clues they would stumble across, and it helped the players visualize the setting.
When I assign the characters to a new ship, I'm going to show them the Enterprise-D deckplans so they can explore their new ship and realize what a cushy ride they're getting.
Most of the time, just saying "You're in sickbay" is all you need, but deckplans are invaluable for rare occasions like boarding actions or chases through the corridors.
