    Question Your favorite LOTR character?

After re-re-re-re-re-reading LOTR again I am curious about who is your favorite character from the books. And I am talking about the books, not the FOTR movie.

For me it is either Merry or Pippin - can't make up my mind right now, but probably Pippin.

Ah..oops. I saw the poll before I read the post. Silly me!

Boromir's my favorite character from the movie; I love tragic heroes.

I'm reading FOTR for the first time right now; I'm right at the council of Elrond. So far, none of the characters interest me much. It's a looooong book, and frankly I'm overwhelmed. I think I went into it expecting fiction, and I'm getting history instead (I do love history, though). I suppose I'll still like Boromir in the books, but I did skip ahead to read the battle of Amon Hen, and it was a bit of a letdown after seeing it in the film.

    Chello!

Book, cartoon, or movie, it's always Gandalf for me. Of course, according to the Middle Earth personality test, I am Gandalf. That's par for the course for me in those tests--I always test out as the Shepherd, Thoth, (old) Obi-Wan....I'm always the scholar-mentor type.

Now if I could just find that link....

Oh Sam, it's all about Sam.

Sam is just a plain fellow with absolutely no pretensions, no long heritage (except in gardening), and no Grand Destiny.

Instead he is just the one who got things done.

The Light When All Else Fails was not in a phial, but in one ordinary individual's heart.

You know, I often think that if the Ring had been given to Sam everybody's problems would be over.

Sam would have destroyed it without a second thought... even Frodo was eventually swayed by it's power, but with Sam it wouldn't have found any soil for it's seeds.

    My vote: Smaugh

Sure he was the villain & was destined to die, but that's just part of his charm

I thought this was just for LOTR characters. If it includes the other works then Finrod Felagund.

I suppose technically Smaugh wasn't a character in what most people consider the trilogy.

My second vote would probably be Gollum.

    Cool

The King's Advisor, Wormtongue. He reminds me of Mr. Suder of Voyager.

(Yes, I've seen The Two Towers preview. )

Legolas it is. Not for the same reason as all the grrlz though.

"The Hobbit" was the first fantasy book I ever read. I was nine. The second was the LotR trilogy. I was ten. As a result, my picture of elves has always been Tolkien's vision, not the modern "faerie" thing. And for that I am forever grateful.

If I was reading LotR for the first time now (age 34), I'd probably go for Boromir if limited to the Fellowship. Possibly Sam. If not limited, then Eowyn would be in contention as well.
