    Living Trek??

I play both Living Arcanis and Living City.

I was wondering, since so many Decipher-connected persons inhabit this board, if Decipher has ever considered, or ever would consider a Living Trek campaign... either as a pure "member-run" campaign like Arcanis, or supervised the way WotC supervises Greyhawk.

I've been having a blast with both LA and LC... and with this wonderful site as a springboard I think Living Trek would have a much easier startup than most other Living Campaign ideas.

Setting up a Living Campaign is currently under consideration by TPTB for both Trek and LOTR. No decisions have been made yet, but they're exploring their options.

    Living Campaigns by RPGA

Imagine your home campaign on a world-wide scale. The scenarios you come up with being played by gamers across the globe. The results of the scenario are sent back to you and then you write the next scenario based on those results.

A "living campaign" is a campaign run by Role-Playing Gamers Assn, a function of WotC. Basically, a group of gamers establish the background for the campaign and take in scenarios from the players. The scenarios are made available to convention organizers or can be played at home under what is called "game days".

The characters played in a living campaign keep the experience points gained from the scenario and are taken to the next con or game day to play in the next scenario. A log sheet is maintained so players can't play the same or different characters in a scenario he's already played in.

Living Campaigns can be as open or closed as the organizers of the campaign want to make it. The Living Greyhawk campaign took the Greyhawk map and the Earth and broke it down into sections. Missouri (where I live) is controlled by a Triad (three gamers) who take in scenario based in a section of Greyhawk. The Triad in turn reports up to the main campaign group (was called circle of six, but not sure anymore). The soon-to-appear Living Spycraft is controlled totally by AEG (or so I can make out).

    More on Living Campaigns

Living Campaigns started out, as I recall, as Living City, a city on the map in the Forgotten Realms D&D world setting. As other campaign ideas were presented to RPGA, the number of campaigns grew. One based on Masque of the Red Death, aptly called Living Death, is a good poster child for living campaigns. An unfortunate would be Living Verge, based on TSR/WotC's Alternity campaign setting. When WotC pulled the plug on Alternity to focus on D&D 3E, the number of players fell off and the campaign is soon to flat-line.

On the fore-front, there is talk of a Living Traveller campaign being kicked around (as soon as d20 Traveller is released). And as I posted before, a Living Spycraft (a real kick-ass game) is ready for release as soon as AEG and RPGA finalize some dealings.

Being one of the folks to help design Living Verge, I had always toyed with the idea of estalishing a "Living Starbase" campaign for Star Trek. I had contacted RPGA years back when LUG was strong, live and kicking. I was told some gamers had already presented an idea and they had first-choice. Then WotC bought LUG, and nothing was ever seen. With the state of Star Trek RPG in flux, I never pursued the idea.

My only concern with creating a Living Starbase campaign would be the number of players. I know lots of gamers play Star Trek RPG. I know lots of gamers go to gaming conventions. But how many of those gamers would go to a con and play Star Trek? Most (in my opinion) go to a gaming con to play D&D. It is, after all, the mother of all RPG's. Second reason is CCG's - Magic, Pokemon, Star Trek and others.

If I knew there was a strong base, then it would be worth the effort. It takes a lot of time and effort into designing a living campaign, lots of group-talk (LV used a WotC email forum for the players to talk to the designers about what they would like to see, what rules to allow and what to not allow, etc.) and lots on long hours typing and drawing. If it is all for the pleasure of a few, is it worth it?

I'm still trying to figure out a way to cross-over Star Trek and In Nomine.

I was approached by someone at Gen Con about putting together a Living Star Trek campaign through the RPGA. I'll forward this stuff through Decipher, but ultimately the decision rests with them.

It looks like WotC/RPGA has pulled the link to their "how-to" page from the RPGA web site, but I have the url:
    http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x...berruncampaign

This should have what you are looking for. Not sure how up to date it is...

I know I have been a poor supporter of Decipher Trek, but I would like to volunteer to help the team that designs a living campaign for Star Trek. That is if Decipher decides to go outside the shop for help/ideas/comments.
