Question Mirror Universe Interregnum (ca. 2295)

I know by the time of DS9, the Mirror Universe has fallen on hard times as far as the Terran Empire is concerned. The Terrans are a slave race, the Klingons rule much of everything, and the Bajorans are just plain kinky.

What I'm curious about, however, is what happened in between, during the long span of time where none of this was ever discussed. Say, the movie era. We know that Spock started a wave of change which ultimately resulted in the Terrans being conquered. But what was happening before that? Is there any canonical guidance? I fear I didn't pay a lot of attention to the DS9 mirror episodes, since I found most of them a little silly, but now I find myself planning ahead and wanting to get a mirror episode together for my own series. I've got some ideas, but I'm curious if anyone has any clear notions of what was happening in the 2290s in the mirror universe.

Thanks for your time and effort.

I ran an adventure in that era in the mirror-universe. Spock was just in the process of putting together his conspiracy to change the nature of the Terran Empire to make it more ethical. The positions of the NPCs in the campaign were interesting: I had all of the villains in the normal universe be part of mirror-Spock's conspiracy in the mirror universe, ethical freedom fighters! The PCs had to ally with the mirror versions of their long running villains in order to get mirror-Spock's help, because mirror-Spock knew the transporter configuration required to get back into the normal universe. After all, mirror-Spock had used that transporter configuration to get Kirk and company back in TOS.

Re: Mirror Universe Interregnum (ca. 2295)

I've been reading the DS9 Companion, which mentions that the writer of "Crossover" was struck by the brutality of the Terran Empire in "Mirror Mirror" and noted that Empires are typically only brutal in their decline. He hypothesized that the Klingons and Cardassians were the "barbarians at the gates" so to speak, and the Empire became more totalitarian in response to their depredations.

Make of that what you will, but it's as good an explanation as I've seen.
'That may be the case, Commander, but here's the truth of it: My great-grandfather was in Starfleet back in Kirk's time. And the fact was that Kirk had some very staunch supporters. That served him well, because he also had any number of people whom he angered with his constant glory-hounding and disregard for regulations. And it was widely believed in Starfleet that, every so often, he would file utterly preposterous reports, just to tweak those individuals whom he knew didn't like his style and his way of doing things. Such as the incident with the giant killer amoeba. And that totally ridiculous alleged occasion in which his fist officer's brain was stolen. I mean, come on people. Clearly, these things could not have happened. Every time you heard uncontrolled laughter ringing up and down the hallways of Starfleet Command, you could tell that Kirk had filed another one of his whoppers." - Admiral Edward Jellico

It would be a neat story or episode to learn what the Mirror Universe version of the TNG crew was up to during this timeframe.

    Ideas?

There's a little about a what a possible TNG mirror universe might look like in Shatner's novel Preserver . Not the most memorable read in the world, but hey, it's Shatner

Well if you have ever read "Dark Mirror" (and I believe there is a support group or at least a class action suit) then you have Dianne Duane's take on what the TNG Mirror crew was like.

As this book was written long before DS9 there is no Klingon/Cadassian/Bajoran Alliance.

Now for me, I don't like the DS9 Mirror Universe as being part of the TOS one.

    But that's just me.

I think it is just ANOTHER alternate universe where things played otu that way.

Completely probable. As implied in Parallels (a.k.a. "Quantum Worf"), there are an almost infinite number of parallel universes. The mirror universe connected with my campaign is based on the erroneous reconstruction of the Voyager crew in Living Witness - DS9/Voyager uniforms with black undertunics and black leather gloves. I've added a commbadge based on the Terran Empire insignia from Mirror, Mirror, the daggers and agonisers from same, and given them back their rank pips (although I use little gold Earths for the solid pips). The crew of the Thames in my Relics campaign (starting up again this month - YAY!) is going to be switched with their counterparts some time over the winter... BWAH-hah-hah-HAH! (Eeeeeevile GM laugh)

'Course, I may also have them meet Peter Quincy Taggart and the crew of the NSEA Protector, which in their universe is an old TV show...

A rather complicated idea I had once was that the DS9 mirror universe was the mirror universe of another "normal" parallel universe (in wich the Federation had indeed been partly conquerred by a Klingon-Cardassion alliance, but with the alternate characters being closer to their "normal" selves - Intendant Kira being for instance an "collaborating" governor of Terok Nor, actually trying to help the Terran resistance the best she can without drawing the attention of Garak). And this universe would be connected with the other mirror universe, in wich the Terran Empire still exists (like the Diane Duane's novel, wich BTW I have been unable to find so far).

    Am I understandable ?
