Star Trek: Schism
The year is 2382 and the galaxy has returned to a more or less even keel.
The reconstruction of Cardassia Prime with the help of the United Federation of Planets has gone quite well. The Cardassian Union (such as it is) has made overtures regarding an alliance with the Federation. Not membership, but a mutually beneficial arrangement. Several formerly-Cardassian worlds (that broke free at the end of or shortly following the Dominion War) have petitioned the Federation for full membership, and a number are very close to completing the process.
The Klingon Empire, though nominally still an imperial organization, has toned down much of its militaristic tendencies, much to the chagrin of several of the more influential (and warlike) houses. The relative peace and stability have not sat well with many, and a new Klingon Civil War seems to be brewing.
With the decimation of their Senate a few years earlier by Reman extremists, the Romulan Star Empire has undergone a number of changes, though most have been behind the scenes. Amongt the more obvious changes were the violent removal of the Proconsul in 2380, and the subsequent establishment of military-enforced curfews and mass arrests throughout Romulus. The junta controlling Romulus has begun losing its grip as many worlds under its "protection" have declared their independence or been annexed by the Taurhai Unity.
The UFP is certainly not without its own problems, however. A subtle shift in power on Vulcan has led to a change in leadership... one favoring Vulcan isolationism. The new leaders have made not-so-subtle overtures to the Federation Council indicating their desire to leave the UFP and sever contact with other space-faring races. Diplomatic efforts aimed at curbing this separatist movement have been attempted both by Starfleet and the UFP leadership, but it appears more and more like the Vulcans may soon declare their independence from the Federation, and their departure could very well spell the end of the United Federation of Planets.
Under the surface, all seems calm, but a raging maelstrom of galactopolitical change seems to be waiting in the wings.

Our country's past progress has been the result, not of the mass mind applying average intelligence to the problems of the day, but of the brilliance and dedication of wise individuals who applied their wisdom to advance the freedom and the material well-being of all of our people.
