I read it a while back (when it came out) and seem to recall that it's a good enough book (as far as Trek novels go, that is). It doesn't include information from Enterprise (take that as good or bad, depending on your point of view), so it might make you do a double-take in certain areas.
As far as I know, it was just a one-shot novel, so it's not a bad pick-up, as, if you don't like it, there's no further series to either ignore or to buy into.
I'd tell you more, but I frankly don't remember much about it, to be honest. I recall that it wasn't a bad book, but that's about it (aside from what you've probably already learned from the book blurb at Amazon or other sites).
