    Enlisted NPCs

I decided to make a few TNG-era Starfleet enlisted characters for fun. They all turned out rather well, I thought, so I'm sharing them with you all.

The characters are made using the following rules:

All of the rules from the sidebar on p. 65 apply.

"Enlisted Crewman" is a quasi-profession, and should be listed as such on the character's base profession and his professional development.

The only professional skills the enlisted character receives are System Ops and either Engineering or Science (not both).

The enlisted character is allowed to choose a "prospective" starship officer elite profession for the purposes of selecting her favored attributes and reaction. IOW, if the character is to be an engineering specialist, then she would select her favored stats as if she were a Starship Engineering Officer.

Enlisted characters are not allowed to take the Promotion edge until they have first taken the Commission edge (detailed below).

    New Edges
    Chief Petty Officer
This edge performs in every way like the Promotion edge, except that it applies only to enlisted personnel. Characters with this edge at level 1 or 2 are still considered subordinate to all officers in their organization.

Prerequisites: Characters with the Enlisted Crewman quasi-profession only. Must qualify for, but not necessarily have purchased, at least one Starship Officer elite profession.

Chief Petty Officer 1: The first time a character purchases this skill, she is promoted to the rank of Chief Petty Officer, Senior Chief Petty Officer or Master Chief Petty Officer, and is commonly referred to as "chief." Chiefs receive a +1 bonus to all social tests to all subordinate enlisted personnel in their organization.

Chief Petty Officer 2: The second purchase of the Chief Petty Officer edge confers the rank of Warrant Officer or Chief Warrant Officer on the character. An enlisted crewman is not able to be promoted beyond this level without first taking the Commission edge. Warrant Officers receive a +2 bonus to all social tests to all subordinate enlisted personnel in their organization, including Chief Petty Officers.

    Commission
This edge promotes an enlisted crewman character to the rank of ensign. Further, the character receives all skills from the Starship Officer list as professional skills. The character will be able to purchase the Promotion edge normally (not normally available to enlisted crewman characters).

Prerequisite: Characters with the Enlisted Crewman quasi-profession only. Must have purchased at least one Starship Officer elite profession.

    Characters to follow soon.

Without having seen how your characters turned out my first impression is you are cutting the enlisted rather short in professional skills. I think it might be not such a bad idea to add at least:
    - Administration (admin specialist)
    - Energy Weapons (security guard)
    - First Aid (medical specialist)
    - Computer Use (operations specialist)
    - Repair or Construct (engineering specialist)
    - Knowledge (science specialist)

Personaly I am inclined to make all the SO professional skills Enlisted professional skills as well and give the characters a few advancements less, to balance the lowered skill costs. But that's just me.

OTOH I like your 'Chief Petty Officer' edge a lot. That's certainly going to be used in my campaign.

Master Chief Turon represents the typical command branch senior enlist. Joining Starfleet 20 years ago, Turon is a highly efficient administrator and system operator, often filling in bridge positions as senior officers head off to the action.

A run-of-the-mill Vulcan, Turon is cool and dispassionate, often coming across as an authoritarian with his juniors. As the senior enlisted advisor to the captain, Turon accurately assesses the crew's status and demeanor presents their views to the CO.

I had thought about that (and discussed it with Doug Burke in another thread), but ultimately decided to go a stricter route on professional skills. I still may add a few more choices (like first aid for medical specialists). Now, wouldn't you make Science the professional skill for lab technicians?

As far as their experience goes, I went with 1 advencement per 2 years of service. It seemed to work out well (Turon, for example, made Chief Petty Officer in his 7th advancement).

    Sea Tyger -

In your movie era character thread you mentioned you wouldn't mind if I moved the thread to the Coda area instead of the Narrator one. In that case I figured it would work equally well in either so I left it in the narrator one. In this case, I think you have some neat stuff which would be of interest to Coda characters, so I hope you won't mind that I'm moving this one to the Coda-Trek group.

No, 'cause using your rules they can choose Science as a professional skill already.
Now that I think about it I'd allow either Knowledge or Computer Use (character's choice) for science specialists. Computer Use seems like the more logical choice, but I figure Knowledge could be valuable for the people involved in the 'soft' sciences.

And maybe you are right about not allowing too many professional skills. With 15 points to buy SO professional skills during character creation basic training should be covered quite well. My main concern about the small number of professional skills was that some 'basic' skills would turn out too low, but maybe your way is more realistic.

I was actually a bit surprised, too, to find that first aid wasn't a starship officer skill, instead reserved to a few of the elite professions.

My main goal of the enlisted rules I presented above was to define a few things that weren't covered in the sidebar while keeping Decipher's vision of what an enlist should be in the Trek universe. I may add first aid to the list of skills a character put his 15 picks into, but that's a decision for another day.

A command master chief is a chief of the boat. They're the same position, just different terms (CMC is used on surface ships and shore stations, CoB is used almost exclusively on submarines).

Sorry about the delay...RL issues took over and I haven't had the chance to finish posting the rest of the enlists. I'll get to them soon.

Landam Nara grew up a member of the Bajoran resistance in the 2350s and 60s, and was one of the first to leave her homeworld the minute the occupation was lifted. Wanting to do anything but stay home with the horrible memories of the Cardassians everywhere she looked, Nara enlisted in Starfleet at the earliest opportunity.

She now works as a systems technician on a starship.

T'Vara represents the typical enlisted crewmember who eventually earns an elite starship officer profession. As a warrant officer, T'Vara normally fills in for the bridge ops watchstander when he is called away from his post.

The daughter of academicians, T'Vara spent most of her time in study. She found meditative benefits in sculpture, and practiced the art as much as her parents would allow. Her enlistment in Starfleet was her "rebellion" against her parents, and T'Vara quickly rose through the enlisted ranks.

She made chief at 28, and completed her operations officer certification two years later. T'Vara was recently promoted to warrant officer.

Tyger, I notice that Landam Nara is knowledgeable about Bajoran Vultures. Don't those fill the same ecological niche as Tarkalian hawks?
