When one of the characters was playing the captain in my game he made to officer recieving the promotion fight him for with Bat'leths. Of course the captain lost because the officer was a Klingon, but it made for an intresting change in the promotion ceremony.

Especialy when the Klingon took the ceremony serious and wanted the captain's position after beating him in a fair duel

What! You're not gonna tell me that didn't happen, do you? Shame on that Klingon! How can he call himself a real warrior!

One small change (IMHO) despite what you see in the old WWII movies, promotions aren't typically given out as rewards. Instead a medal is given as a "reward" - granted if you do things that get you medals then you will most likely get promoted, perhaps even early.

So, I'd not have the CAPT make it a big meritorious deal if it is just a regular run of the mill "time in grade" thing. Now in the DOM war things might be different, but again there would also likely be a less formal setting.

When I was promoted (in real life) from LTJG to LT my CAPT had a small "all hands" gathering during a work day and my wife came in and put on one shoulder board and the CAPT put on the other - he also made a brief speech about all the good things I'd been doing, pat on the back and back to work sort of thing. I've seen a variety of things along that line. However, if I'd asked the CAPT for there not to be a "show" at all he'd have most likely have gone along with that.

Now, the "wetting down" or buying everyone who shows up at a given pub or club at a pre-arranged time a drink or series of drinks is "mandatory" (i.e not officially sanctioned, but expected).

Reminds me of my college fencing master, who allowed you to challenge your grade, in which case he would drill you on the spot. One gentleman went from a B to a C.
