Question Got a promotion coming up...

Ok guys, I need your help once again. I've got a player coming up for promotion soon. He's currently a Lt. (jg), and is being promoted to a full Lt. My problem is coming up with the proper wording to use during the game. I've never been in the military (and probably never will) so I don't know what the proper terminology for something like this would be. His wife is a captain in the Air Force, so I'm sure if I slipped, he'd never let me live it down. Any help out there?

    Thanks in advance,
    Michael

Why not ask his wife? If she's a player in the game, you could have her character in on it.

    Unhappy

I had already thought of that, however, his wife isn't a player. Can you believe it... she doesn't like Star Trek... the horror!!! Anyway, to cut to the chase, being a stickler of a player, if he found out I used his wife as a reference, that would be just as bad as screwing the thing up by myself. He'd let me have it with both barrels, and he'd never let me live it down.

I'd imagine that you could start with something like, "Attention to Orders! For meritorious service, blah, blah, blah, we are pleased to grant <player> the rank of Lieutenant with all the duties and privleges therein."

It's up to you whether or not there's a formal oath '... to uphold the Federation Charter, and defend its member worlds against all enemies, foreign and domestic ...' -- but that's likely done upon your graduation/commissioning.

If the player wants to quibble about the wording, you can always have the commanding officer raise an eyebrow and say, "Does that mean you don't want the promotion?" ;D

    Rent Generations.
Worf gets promoted, with full 16th Century regalia.

    Question

Err... sorry, but this is not the Air Force, the Navy or anything. This is Starfleet, just think of something.
As far as I know, every time we saw a Starfleet Promotion on screen it was different.

    How about:
In reward for excellence in service and for presenting and living of the principles installed by the Federation and Starfleet your are promoted to rank of full Lieutenant with all privileges and duties...

    That's what I would use

There was Sisko's promotion to Captain, given by his son.

    Ezri Dax to Lieutenant!

Paris's demotion, and recovery of his Lieutenant Pips.

    Tuvoks promotion to Lieutenant Commander.

But on the whole Promotions have been handled as stated on a case by case basis, and in the cases of Jadzia Dax, Dr Bashier. Worf for Lt (jg) to full Lt. La Forge from Lt (jg0 through to Lt Commander, Deanna... All were promoted off-screen.

So if you are truely worried aboutthe ceremony, have the player describe the ceremony TO YOU?

That way you get to be the bigger man if he fluffs it, or just cut loose and have fun!!!

Speaking as some one who is still in the Navy which Starfleet is based off of. When officers or enlisted are promoted they are frocked. That is they where the rank and have all the priviledge of that rank except the pay which is based of linear numbers for officers and an increment cycle for enlisted.

Wow. Dick Marcinko as a signature. I'd thought about posting some of his appendix stuff from 'The Real Team' at work, but figured I'd offend someone.

I like Dan's signature. I can't help me, but it strongly reminds of this Simpson's guy on TV.

In the TNG Core Book, one of the chapters (don't know which, off the top of my head) has a sequence where the Captain promotes one of his junior officers to a full Lieutenant (I think).

Why not adopt, adapt, mutilate that?

My favorite promotion speech was LaForge's promotion.

Picard simply stated, "Here ya go Lietenant." Short, sweet, to the point.

But most players enjoy the attention and the pomp.
