    Structural units: 101

Having just 'converted' (or being in the process of it, actually) to CODA, I've been perusing this board and finding tonnes of terrific starship designs.

Now, I'm still waiting for my local store to get the NG in, so I haven't yet been able to look over the CODA starship rules.

However...could someone briefly explain the "STructural Units" concept to me? It seems strange that an Intrepid would have 30, a Galaxy only 35 and a shuttle 15.

Obviously it's not size related, but I was wondering how it works.

    Thanks.

Actually, they are directly related to size--a vessel's Size rating determines its available structure.

Structure (and Size) are two abstract elements that are used to help define how much space is available on a ship to put components, weapons, and other nifty stuff. When you directly compare a Galaxy versus an Intrepid, as in your example, because of the clear size difference, there is an expectation that the Galaxy need have a Structure rating two to three times that of the smaller ship. That's simply not the case.

When you see the construction rules and the sample ships I think you'll get a better idea of what I'm talking about. While the Size difference between the two ships in question isn't that great, the sample vessels in the NG illustrate well (IMO) the differences between the two classes of vessels.

It's also worth noting that in the "Starships" book, coming to a store near you "soon" , that the Size forumla was alterned somewhat to give larger ships more available structure. The old linear formula (used in the NG) didn't model it well, IMO. At lower Size categories the difference isn't that noticable, but as you get larger becomes more pronounced.

Ahh...thanks Don, that has clarified it a bit for me.

So, it's more along the lines of needing a certain, minimum number of components: warp drive, impulse, shield generators, etc, and the bigger ships get more 'gravy' (labs, holodecks, crew-lounges, bigger living quarters, etc).

Is that a fair thing to say?

I was assuming they were somthing like Structurall Units in Spacedock and thinking "let's say a photon torpedo does 15 damage and will take out a shuttle with one hit - does that mean it will take out Voyager with 2, and crippled the Enterprise-D with 2?"

But you've clarified it a little for me, thanks.

Thanks for the tip, Sig, but I'd feel too guilty!
I ordered the PG thru Mind Games down here in Geelong (the owner of which, Kevin, is a really cool dude who I have a lot of time for), and he wasn't sure how long it'd take to get in.

Then, when we were on holidays (last school holidays) in Sydney, I found it in a Sydney store and grabbed it. I rang Kevin (from Mind Games) the next day to tell him to cancel the order, and before I could, he excitedly told me the PG had arrived.

I then had to explain that I'd got it yesterday...and felt really bad about it, because I really don't think it's going to sell down here from his shelves.

Anyway, the upshot is that I don't want to do the same thing to him again! Yeah, I know, I know - he's running a business and all that - but he's always been loyal to me as a customer, so I feel I owe him some loyalty back.

But...I'll check out the Moorabin one for other stuff - thanks for the tip.
