[b]Of course, Calcoran, the phrase you were looking for was "better than we are," since the French have the rep, but the Italians get the results.

    LCM:
Certainly not! Italians are worse than we are, they most definitely lack the tact ... hence we get the reputation maybe. Reputation is not such a bad thing sometimes, mind you.

    Dave:
I was in Japan for two years too, but in Tokyo (actually, between Tokyo and Yokohama, as near to the campus as I could (Tokyo Institute of Technology)). Nihongoga jozu?
The more I think about it, the more I think the French officer should be maybe communication officer (very talented for languages ... if only she could get rid of that endearing but exasperating French accent) ... she's been reprimanded more than once for not dressing strictly according to the uniform, using some fancy accessories (and even once causing a riot on the bridge). If there is an opportunity for changing clothes (like being assigned to an away team), she definitely will, even if there seems to be no noticeable difference between the two outfits (well, I know my wife does this!). And of course, althought she could be a good cook if she sticked to conservative cooking, everybody fears her cooking experiments. The fact is that a most officers would like to date her, but almost noone dares in fear of being invited for dinner in her quarters .
All right, so maybe I read too much Terry Pratchett, but I do like characters that are quite different from what everybody expect from them. Besides, the engineer HAS to be German, hasn't he?

Having grown up on one of the first colonies John was taught to live off and with the land. He views the federation with awe and believes in it's charter with great fire. His grandfather taught him a very strict value system which he has mixed with the honor of starfleet. He very much cannot wait to get on to exploring and pushing the barriers of the federation even farther than they already are.

(Ok first draft...there is more that I can do and will. What do you think?)

Ok...growing up in the political household and not getting arrested for underage drinking or having a problem with bridges Evelyn grew up knowing that she was going to be going into politcs someday, but she also wanted to do something that would make her stand out from anyone else...STARFLEET!

When she is done and has finished her own command she is going into politics and plans to maker her name remembered into the next century.

    Hoy!

You're asking me for the traits of a stereotypical Argentinian. Wow, ain't that complex... I have to divide them into five major groups:

    - Porteņos: from Buenos Aires city
    - Big town people: from Cordoba, Rosario, or other big urban centers in the inner country
    - Northeastern people: mountain people, relaxed or really working persons, depending the province )
    - Northwestern people: a mixture between Argentinian and South Brazilian traits
    - Southern people: almost like Federation colonists.

So, Porteņos are cocky, think they can seduce anyone, one in ten should be able to dance Tango, they love to fix and jury-rig stuff (as opposed to Germans). Arrogant, Sexy and Domineering should be the main traits. Add Shrewd, and Argumentative (we love a good argument... it's the Italian blood in us). Economy mainly based in services.

The people from the inner cities: funny, better sense of humor, way clever and fast-thinking. They seem to be kinder than us, and more concerned with the welfare of the rest. Also, they seem to have a big concentration of artists. Industrial and agricultural economies.

People from the Northeast: they should be athletic and resistant (long distances with no good access... I can picture that will remain until the 24th Century). A little slower in movement and thought. They don't need as much adrenaline to face their lives. Most of them live above 2 km high. Focus on Athletics and Craft, agriculture and natural sciences.

The Northwest: rich land, lots of vegetation, tropical land. You could say they're natural people, with survival skills. A mix between Argentinian and Brazilian customs.

Southern people: tough, resistant to cold, prepared for disasters and the oblivious minds of the capital city bureaucrats. They HAVE to be clever to procure themselves with things. Focus in mineral-related skills, and engineering. Also Toughness, and Intolerant (big city people). These are persons who live in groups of three for each five square miles of land.

Ah, I forgot! Make them ALL football fanatics! Both as players and spectators. And I mean *between teeth* soccer...

    Hope this is enough.

    Ronin:
If the French ensign was designed based on the ideas I posted, if I may suggest a few things ...
I'd say Coordination is too high ... no need for fitness edge either. Rather give her the "sexy" advantage (if only because most TOS women have to be sexy ... or to reflect her dressing habits). Maybe another language, like Klingon or Romulan (2). And something for her hobbies: artistic expression (dressing)(designing clothes)(cooking)(haute cuisine) 1(4)(2)(3)(1) ... something like that (my books are at home, so I can't do the maths).
The hedonist disad is a good idea. Great work .

P.S.: About the "problem with bridges", call me stupid, but I just don't get it ...

    Cal,

Yes the idea was yours modified of course, I'll take a look at the changes.

The bridges refers to the Kennedy family specifically Teddy and the unfortunate incident where a woman was killed when he drove off a bridge in the early 60's.

    Germans in Trek, Part 2:

    The Bavarians

Bavaria is a strange little country on the edge of germany. At the same time a center of high technologie and backward, rural farms, it is closely allied yet slightly seperated from german laws and customs.

The average bavarian is darker haired and smaller in size than the german mayority and speaks a heavy accent similar to the Apalachian or London docks accent.

He considers beer to be food and consumes it in 1 liter portions called a Mass. After a certain amount of beer he (or she) is easily agitated and prone to acts of insult "Saubuash, damischer" (Idiot son of a pig" and even physical violance. This is considered acceptable social behaviour and even reflects in folk dances (Schuhplatler where mock whacks are exchanged)

Bavarians tend to be quite religious, mostly catholic and even more conservative than the average german. They are earth prime builders of overprized, over-engeniered luxury and sport shuttles.

As Star Fleet officers they gravitate to cooking and security (and most SF personel would prefer the stick to security)

Germans in Star Fleet Part 3: The costal german

The costal german is divided into two distinct subspecies. The mayoritie belongs to the east and west frisians while a minoritie considers Hamburg their point of origin.

    The Frisians

Though views as slow and a bit dull these group consist of rugged, canny individuals used to hardship and manual labor. The speak a strange dialect almost non-understandable (even Bavarian is easier) and form a close nit society. They are weary of the government

Their space travel is mostly as smugglers, salvagers and pirats. They also make great space station designers due to their long tradition of keeping the environment (the North sea) out.

    The Hamburgians

This is the city dwelling version of the Frisian. Their dialect sounds like they are having a sharp stone in one shoe and they can be as pig-headed as the frisian. They work better with authoritie and specialise in starship-building. The also like to travel and form packs and associations of traders viewing for monopolies.

    Ja:

    Empathy -1

No social skills beyond absolut minimum. I make Scotty look like a party animal

High skill levels with arcane specialisations
    Add history: Federation

    Disadvantages like:

    Obsession: Perfect work
Quirk: Nows the rules by heart and follows them
Quirk: Lecherous (Hey, not that many females at university etc.)
    Quirk: Clipped speech

    Advantages like:

    High alcohol tolerance (beer)
    Language talent

And part 4 of germany: Special and related species

The Westfalian (aka Me): Some claim they are the result of cross-breeding a wild pig and a bavarian. They are hardy, down to earth people with strong religious tendencies and a couple of hundret dialects (each 5km a new one). They consider bavarians weak since bavarians don't drink real beer or snaps. They love pigs and are big fans of Tellarites. They are thick-headed and either don't talk for days or without end for hours. Sometimes living in the past (which was better for sure) They have a tendency to ignore the authorities and stick to their clan. Difficult to befriend but loyal when done so. Make good security officers or small-ship scout teams.

The Austrian: A german sub-species with a distinct dialect. Austrians go for multiple scientific or social titles and constantly lobby to transform the UFP into a monarchy. Outside of the title hunt they are relaxed, lovable people with strange customs and nutritions. They are cosmo-politan and love discussions. Great diplomats but second rate engineers.

The Rhinelandians: Most of the year they are marginally different from the Westfalians. But between 11/November and the start of christian fasting time they transform and join in on organised fun and strange talk during a fifth season known as Carnival. Especially during the last few days of this most social norms are somewhat released for a giant party with booth, funny parades and other fun. Two subspecies, the Duesseldorfer and Colonians which can be distingusched by drinking habits.
