    Character Creation

For characters whose professions have prerequisites (IE Starship officer elite profession) how do you satisfy the pre requisits of a character being created for the purpose of commanding?

Do we just give them those skills? or do they have to come out of the development package?

Also, are there misc skills that can be given in addition to the packages (say if a doctor took an engineering course at the acadamey, could they take "system repair +1)

    Please let me know.

Starship Officers are required to take the Starship Duty Professional Ability. This allows them to take a Starship Officer Elite Profession without having to meet the other prerequisites.

Additionally, the prerequisites for the Starship Officer Elite professions should read "Starship Duty OR..."

As far as "miscellaneous skills", each Profession has a list of Professional Skills. When taking a Professional Development Package, you get five picks to spend on any of those Professional Skills as you see fit.

To use your example, Repair is a Professional Skill for a Starship Medical Officer, so yes, he could take one of those five picks in Repair.

You would run them through as many advancements as you feel necessary to give them the prerequisites. There are no "magical number" of advancements that represents a First Officer or Captain in the game--in theory you could have a CO with 1-2 advancements, reminicient of Capt John Herriman.

Also, it's worth pointing out (as Doug did) that the Starship Duty professional ability also fulfills the prereq requirements for your first Starship Officer EP and that all Starship Officer characters get the Starship Duty ability for free when created. (Page 66, 2nd col, 1st paragraph.)

So, with that in mind, you get your first EP for free at the start of play via Starship Duty and don't have to worry about prerequsistes.
