CODA Tour of Duty Advancement Packages

I tried to figure out a way to bring in Tour of duty packages into Coda and came up with these. These two are the first I came up with and are the testbed so to speak. each has several subpackages tailored to a specific profession for now all are Starship officer packages. the idea is you would purchase ech package with your advancement instead of making individual selections.

    Shakedown Cruise
As the first crew of newly launched vessel you had the experience of trying out the new girl finding both her good points and flaws.

    Professions: Starship Officer only

Engineer Officer: Engineering, Propulsion (Warp or Impulse) +2; Engineering, Structural + 1; Repair +1

Operations Officer & Flight Control Officer: Engineering, Systems (Choose) +2; System Operations +2, Repair +1

Command Officer: Administration +1; Engineering, Any +1; System Operations +1, Repair +1

All Other Starship Officer Elite Professions: Engineering, any +1; System Operation +1; Spend remaining two picks as desired.

    Optional: Catastrophic Failure
It may be the 24th century but Starfleet is not perfect and bad things do happen to new ships.

Catastrophic Failure: First Aid +1 or Survival +2; System Operation (Damage Control) +2; Famous Event (+1 to renown) NOTE: Starship Security and Medical officers have one additional Pick remaining if choosing first aid +1.

    Starfleet Medical Packages

These are for those with the Starship Medical Officer profession enjoy

    STARFLEET MEDICAL
Starfleet Medical is a vast organization consisting of many parts including ship and station personnel, managing medical hospital vessels and providing trained medical personnel for planetary survey teams. These are just some of the tours an individual can have in Starfleet Medical.

    Administrative Duty
Some consider administrative duty a curse for others it is a calling fulfilled but never mind how someone views it, the truth is it has little to do with practicing real medicine.

Skills: Administration +1; Computer Use +2; Knowledge: Politics +1

    Alien Study
An alien study is simply a full year of learning alien exobiology at a Starfleet institution instead of the pleasures of actually visiting the species planet.

Skills: Medicine (Choose Species) +2; Life Science (Exobiology) +1

    Research
Getting the chance to work as part of a medical research team is considered a high goal among many junior as well as senior officers.

Skills: Computer Use +2; Life Science +1; Physical Science +2

    Surgical Practice
Many Starfleet surgeons practice their craft at grand Starfleet run hospitals and the larger space stations.

Skills: Life Science +1; Medicine (Surgery) +2; System Operations +1

    Standard Starship/Starbase Tour
This is the bread and butter part of the job and where most Starfleet doctors are too be found day in day out.

Skills: First Aid +1; Medicine +2; Systems Operation +2

    Planetary Survey Team Medic
Charged with finding nearly instant cures and treatment for exotic conditions these personnel are truly valued by their teammates.

Skills: First Aid +2, Life Science (exobiology) +1; Survival +1

How about some "regular" (read non medical) science officer ToD's?

Well done, Eric. Some may argue that it could take some flexibility for the advancement system, but when you need to fill some years in your starship officer's career, it suits very well.

Even more: this is something similar to the customization of ICON character creation some GMs in my gaming group did in 1999. They felt that the Tour of Duty and Academy Life were too standarized, and everyone wouldn't actually learn the same skills, depending mainly on the department they were serving for. I think this is a step in the right direction. Keep it coming!

    Brilliant...absolutely love 'em, Eric.

One thing I loved with ICON was the TOD packages - you could bash together a character & their history in about five minutes, if you knew what you were doing.

I even developed a spreadsheet (have to dig it out and convert it) that let you randomise your TODs to a certain extent, giving you a bit of variety (not every SF officer gets posted where they want! )

Made it a bit like the Traveller generation system, only more streamlined, and you couldn't die in character generation!

    Keep 'em coming!

Great concept! I have number of folks in my ST group that are brand-new to role-playing and this would certainly help them make character based choices.

As a GM, of course, I'd limit access to certain packages depending on the adventures the characters have played but, as someone else said, this is excellent for bashing together advanced characters on the fly.

I can also see ToD packages for Romulan and Klingon characters as well as possible packages representing various Klingon endurance rituals.

Moderators, this thread deserves to be sticky! Please!

I like the idea a lot.
In my last campaign I used the ToD's from the ICON rules even though I did not use the ICON system. I simply used dice to roll for the ToD's to fill in the background of both players and NPC's. Of cours the players had a control over the base profession, but the needs of the service would send them to many unexpected places in the background. I would not use them for current advancement's, those being the provence of player choice, but they would be great for backgrounds.
    More, please.
