Why was Sci Fi showing Braveheart tonight?

Simple question. Is Braveheart "science" fiction?

No, it'd be considered factual fantasy.

Sci fi shows a lil bit of everything. Some horror, sci-fi, fantasy. I've seen Hellraiser on there, Lord of Illusions, Legend, think I've even seen Princess Bride on there once or twice.

When I was watching earlier, they were showing commercials, which they'd interrupt every now & then for a short break in which they would show "The 13th Warrior"...

Braveheart would be considered historical fantasy. Since it is based on the life of william wallace.

This is part of the reason I hate watching television. Commercials! Ugh. Give me a TV, a DVD player, and a Blockbuster card.

I assume by "based on" you mean something on the order of "heard there was a guy named William Wallace who fought the English a bit and won once."

Other than that, the movie is drivvel as history, but whopping great as cinema

Sci-fi channel ceased being a regular watched channel in our household when it ceased being a 24/7 sci-fi chanell. If i want psychics and scotmen killing the english, who aren't all immortal, I'll watch TBS or one of the old broadcast stations. They cancelled Farcape, they revived Sliders (twice...? and that ending dear god...what a bitter pill that was), they created Legends of the Rangers, show it twice a year and then refused to make a series out of it -- why? because John Edwards is almost free to make, get's good ratings and is a cash cow. and Mr. Braveheart is a popular actor (god knows why, the man is an A******, sorry but he's one of those people who are fine on the screen, but should not be allowed to speak in public, at least whilst children are present, and he's a homophobe to boot), who again is guarenteed ratings.

The sci-fi channel sold out a while ago. it's just TBS with a few more sci-fi related shows on board. It's all about the ratings, and $$$ and advertisements. I want my original, real sci-fi channel back, hence our family gets the stuff we want on DVD and we make it ourselves. rant off... ;-)

Yeah, we were wondering why they were showing it too. Probably because USA did a couple of weeks back.

And I agree with Atlirith, although I still watch the channel quite a bit. Sci-Fi has "lost it's way" in a lot ways. They kill a show because it "can't get past it's core audience"! We were the ones who made the show a hit! Guess our opinions don't matter.
And why do they have to run thing into the ground, like they are doing with X-Files?
And why do bad things happen to good people?

On a related note, TLC, History Channel and such like need to get off of the whole "In Search Of" shtick. I'm sorry, but if you're presenting yourself as educational, you should try and stick somewhat to the facts, and leave the horses**t to Art Bell. (And John Edwards needs to get sent to the pen if he devieates a nanometer from his "Entertainment Purposes Only" claim. Only reason that fraud isn't locked up is that he doesn't have the "voices from beyond" giving stock advice...)

USA is turning Sci-Fi into something like Action TV, that menas there will be a market for an new Sci-Fi channel.

Maybe you guys can send letters and get your cable/satellite provider to carry the Canadian channel Space

Uh, capitals on names, unless you're discussing e.e. cummings, guys...

Braveheart is far more fantasy than history - for one thing, Wallace was a lowlander, not a highlander. That means no kilt and no claymore...

1) I don't think Farscape was cancelled, last I heard it was due back about January 5th... Sci-Fi seems to only order ~10 episodes at a time, and when they order some, Farscape starts filming... and with all the post production, it takes a bit of time. I'll look more into it in a moment, It could have been cancelled, and I missed the memo.

2) Legend of the Rangers: I loved Babylon 5, and thanks to that, I pretty much can't watch star trek TV anymore, but the Ranger movie was bad. and I'm talkin' really bad, like "I'd rather watch season 5 again" bad... like "what a bout a season 5 marathon with "River of Souls" tagged on the front and back ends" kinda bad... So, I'm glad it's not a series, that way I can remember Babylon 5 the way it was meant to be, a 4 year series, that just ended too soon.

3) UPDATE: Yup, looked it up, you were right, Farscape cancelled. My god.. I'm stunned... Boy.. they sure do seem to shoot themselves in the foot a lot.. MST3K, Farscape, Invisible Man, wow... this really is pathetic... I'm gonna go brood now...

Comedy Central cancelled MST3K several years ago, but Sci-Fi bought it up and gave the crew a chance to keep going for a few more years. So don't blame the Sci-Fi Channel here -- MST3K would've ended a lot sooner if the Sci-Fi Channel hadn't intervened!

As for the way it ended, I feel that MST3K pretty much ran its course.

I love the show immensely. But after 10 years of being on the air, its writers knew they had done their job and decided to take off for new challenges.

It wasn't like it ended in the middle of a plot. The final episode (which was quite funny) ended with the SOL returning to Earth -- with a final scene that directly points back to the very first episode!
