    HomeBrew Trek Help, please!!!!!!!

I want to make my own SIMPLE homebrew Trek system. I'm doing one PBEM now that using percentiles, but want one that uses only d6's since not everyone has a bunch of polyhedra laying around. I also want to keep character creation pretty simple. Maybe just five-eight stats so the player and myself don't have a ton of numbers to handle.

Any experience with making a PBEM game that runs pretty smoothly? Instant messenger isn't an option since I am a wokring family type.

    Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I see no-one has answered you yet, so lest you feel left out...

If you want a system which uses only d6, why not base it on the ICON system, or for an even simpler system try the old WEG Star Wars rules as a basis?

Can you (or anyone) give me a quick idea how the Icon system works. I've seen the stats, but don't know what "Starship Sensors 3(5)" (or any skill rating) really means in terms of game mechanics.

I have played the old SW d6 system, but it was always a lot of dice to be rolling and counting. Found it especially clumsy if you were adding the starships and the pilot's dice together.

    Thanks in advance.

    I used LUG last.

Started with FASA back in the day though

Been kicking around a SAGA system set of rules, but nothing I am happy with yet.

    Okay, here's how it works...

Each Skill is controlled by a particular Attribute (sometimes modified by an Edge). Each task is assigned a difficulty which has a target number you need to equal or better with your roll.

For instance, let's say your character needs to make a starship sensors roll. The appropriate skill is Shipboard Systems (Sensors) {meaning a specialisation in Sensors within an overall skill area of Shipboard Systems}, and the controlling Attribute is Intellect. Since the character is looking for something with the sensors, the GM (or Narrator) decides that the Perception Edge applies. The character has:

    Intellect 2
    Perception Edge +1

    and a skill of:

    Shipboard Systems (Sensors) 2 (3).

The GM assigns a difficulty of Moderate (7) to the task.

The Attribute (plus or minus the appropriate Edge) tells you how many dice to roll, in this case 3. One die is of a contrasting colour, and is called the Drama Die. You roll the specified number of dice and take the highest - if the Drama Die is a 6, it is added to the next highest die. The Specialisation is added to the result. If you don't have the specified Specialisation, but do have the overall Skill, you roll against the base Skill level.

You roll a 3, a 4, and a 2 on the Drama Die. You take the high roll of 4 and add your 3 Specialisation, for a result of 7. This equals the Difficulty number, so you succeed.

If you roll 6 or more higher than the Difficulty number, you have made a Dramatic Success, and good things happen. If you roll 6 or more lower than the Difficulty number, it's a Dramatic Failure, and Bad Things happen. A die roll of all 1's, it's also a Dramatic Failure.

Thanks for the information on the Icon system.

Sounds like trying to figure out the percent chance of success for any given roll would be very tricky. But it gives me something to think about.

    Thanks for the ICON %'s.

Thinking of using 3d6 (roll under, lower roll wins opposed rolls) with the following damage possibilities:

Use the lowest of the three dice for hand-to-hand damage
Middle die for clubs, sticks (use the tied die if there is a tie) damage
    High Die for edged weapons
    Two lowest for phasers
    Two highest for phaser rifles
All three for things set on disintegrate/disrupt.

Any thoughts? Players would have a choice to up their hand to hand damage by using some skill points.
