Thumbs down We're the government...we're here to help...

"Pub and club revellers face a drugs test as soon as they enter the premises. Anyone going into a bar, whether they arouse suspicion or not, will be asked to take a swab test, which highlights any drug use. The scheme is being run by police in south Staffordshire and will initially cover the towns of Cannock and Stafford. Police have warned that anyone refusing will automatically arouse suspicion and have told establishments that do not co-operate that it will be held against them when their licences come up for renewal." (Daily Telegraph)

"War is an ugly thing but not the ugliest of things; the decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feelings which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. A man who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself."

Here in the United States, this would be actionable on Fourth Amendment grounds. At least until the administration finishes the Constitutional attack that began with the entirely inappropriately named Patriot Act.

In the UK? I don't know what protections exist there. However, they've confiscated everyone's firearms, so they obviously don't hold individual rights in too high a regard...

Yeah, I can really see pub and club owners abiding by that! It'll drive their businesses to ruin. They won't need to get new licenses if there's no business to operate.

People go out to enjoy themselves, no matter where they live -- the US, Canada, Britain, wherever. A police presence tends to stop people from having an enjoyable evening.

Think about it. If you go to the local pub, do you want a cop sticking a swab in your mouth before you can go inside! It's sheer lunacy!
