With the passing of Richard Harris (Professor Dumbledore in the Harry Potter movies), WarnerBrothers, the distributor of the movies, has announced thatMichael Gambon will take over the role in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.

1) how many books she'll write and

2) whether they'll replace the actor who plays Harry if he gets too old for the role? (They should, but will it sell?)

I m not really sure if the actors age will be a problem, I mean each book is one year of Potter's life, and the films are done in less then a year. It depends if Radcliffe and the others were the right age to begin with, or if they want out ear;y. Which I have heard could be a possibility.

I think that JK Rowling has said that she will do a book to cover each of Harrys 7 years at Hogwarts.

So 7 books.

As something of a layman Harry Potter fan, here's how I understand things...

I believe that, like Perry has already said, she's supposed to write 7 books (1 book for each of Harry's 7 years at Hogwarts), though she's only under contract to write the first 5 (the 5th of which, 'Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix' is supposed to have been recently finished and is supposed to be going through the layout and print stages). As far as I know, she doesn't have all 7 books finished, though she does have a tremendous amount of notes and outlines, as well as the final chapter of the final book finished (though she's said in interviews that the chapter in question is subject to change, though she doesn't expect that it will).

Along the lines of the actual topic at hand, though, here's something to consider, especially in light of the passing of Richard Harris: Rowling has said that a 'major character' dies in the upcoming 5th book, though she's not said who. I've been thinking that it might now be Dumbledore (whether it originally was intended to be him or not is anybody's guess), but it seems that the passing of Dumbledore might now be likely, especially given the extra time that Rowling spent on the upcoming book, and her comments that she had to 'rework' a few key bits at various stages.

Personally, I hope it's not Dumbledore, as I really enjoy that character (both in the books and onscreen), but, at the same time, I like the vast majority of the characters that would probably be considered 'major', so who knows. I guess I'll have to wait until the new book comes out (whenever that will be), to find out...

It's fairly obvious that she's working towards a final confrontation with Voldemort in the last book. Given that, the buildup would involve both maturing Harry Potter -- and kicking the legs out from beneath him. That means depriving him of the people he counts on. Of those, Dumbledore is undoubtly the most powerful. In fact, there's been a clear sense in the books that Voldermort is balked by the possibility of confronting Dumbledore.

So, Dumbledore would be a logical character to kill off, to turn the screws a bit and increase the tension.

Sadly, though he is my favourite character in the books, he has the word "MARTYR" written across his forhead in large, red, not-so-friendly letters.

I mean, the guy has already been to Azkaban and has had to be physically restrained from turning several individuals into ent-mulch for insulting Dumbledore or Harry...
