Nemesis "lowest-grossing Trek film EVER" ?

    Ouch !

I saw the other Threads about box office numbers and thought I'd post this as a follow up.

Somthing's very wrong in the Federation these days if a stinker like ST-V will likely out-do ST-X IMHO.

While the Star Wars franchise continued to roll, the Star Trek franchise got rolled. Star Trek: Nemesis, the Federation gang's 10th big-screen adventure, has beamed up just $34 million since opening December 13. Barring a late surge, Nemesis will go down as the lowest-grossing Trek movie ever--yes, even stinkers like Star Trek V: The Final Frontier managed $55 million at the Stateside box office.
Here's a rundown of 2002's top 25 box-office moneymakers, through Sunday, per Exhibitor Relations:

    1. Spider-Man, $406 million
    2. Star Wars: Episode II--Attack of the Clones, $310 million
    3. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, $240 million
    4. Signs, $227 million
    5. My Big Fat Greek Wedding, $222 million
    6. Austin Powers in Goldmember, $213 million
    7. The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, $200 million
    8. Men in Black 2, $192 million
    9. Ice Age, $176 million
    10. Scooby-Doo, $153 million
    11. Die Another Day, $147 million
    12. Lilo & Stitch, $146 million
    13. XXX, $141 million
    14. The Santa Clause 2, $135 million
    15. Minority Report, $132 million
    16. The Ring, $127 million
    17. Mr. Deeds, $126 million
    18. Sweet Home Alabama, $125 million
    19. The Bourne Identity, $121 million
    20. The Sum of All Fears, $118 million
    21. 8 Mile, $114 million
    22. Road to Perdition, $104 million
    23. Panic Room, $95 million
    24. Red Dragon, $93 million
    25. The Scorpion King, $90 million

And that folks, should be Chapter One in the new bestseller, "Why not to compete with Lord of the Rings"

Seriously, while you could blame the low take for Trek's woes - the truth is likely that fans had a choice between two films and chose Two Towers.

That what is likely going to happen with me.

Wow. STV is not going to be the lowest grossing Trek film of all time. Ouch.

It's possible something good could come of this: Paramount may look at this and say "It's time to change out the creative staff. The franchise concept is clearly not dead, look at Die Another Day. But the folks responsible for OUR franchise don't seem to be getting the job done."

It's not even necessarily their fault. There's only so long one set of people can work on something before they burn out. That's why comic book authors eventually move on, and it's why there are very few "endless" series of books.

It's time for Rick and Brannon to move on to other things, and someone new to take over the helm.

I was just reading somewhere where Nemesis's opening weekend take was about midrange for Star Trek films. Must try to look up again.

Yup...great idea. Let's bring the movie out a week before LOTR. I knew this one was doomed just due to that...and the movie was pretty weak.
"War is an ugly thing but not the ugliest of things; the decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feelings which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. A man who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself."

I may be mistaken, but I'd swear that Star Trek II came out the week before E.T.

Well, you don't have to choose either one. I went to both TTT and NEMESIS on Christmas Day. Of course, it helps to have the free movie cash for TTT showing, and that I went during the daytime for the matinee price.

    Yup, I'm a cheap SOB.

But as I probably have said in a previous posting, I sat with my eyes riveted for nearly three hours watching TTT despite having drank a jumbo-sized soft drink. With NEMESIS, I can't helped but yawned and scratch my head frequently. Personally, if Brent Spiner wanted to end Data's life in this movie, he can pretty much end the admiration of his fans as well, since he is partly responsible for the storywriting.
    Anyhoo, just some random thoughts...

I may lose my Trek fan card for this, but I have yet to see Nemesis, and have seen The Two Towers all of four times, with more to come. I haven't heard a single good reason to go see Nemesis. It being another Trek movie isn't enough for me.

Paramount will get my money this year at any rate, as I'll be buying up DS9 on DVD.

Ineti, we'll have to turn in our cards together - I've seen Two Towers three times and haven't managed to see Nemesis yet...

I'm not avoiding it, just life is awfully busy. If we didn't need a babysitter to get to the theatre I'd probably have seen it by now.

See I am the other way around.

I just didn't have 5 hours of a day to put aside for TTT.

I mean it is an hour to get ready and go, 3 hours for the movie and then at least an hour wind down and return.

I will see it, but I doubt it will be soon.

Nemesis, for better or worse, took up a 3 hour block for me one Friday afternoon.

In my mind there were a couple of problems with ST-X...

1st: As has been said, the timeing of the movie coming out. I went and saw it on opening day...but my mind was really geared toward The Two Towers coming out the next week.

2nd: The story, while "ok" for a Trek was IMHO just more retreaded story line from the TV episodes...

I mean come-on, yet ANOTHER Data "brother" (and it was not even Lor somehow retured). You mean to tell me THIS was the best they could whip up ?

And the whole "Clone of Picard" thing really did not do much for me.

This is the first Trek movie I have not really cared if I see twice (Hell I even saw ST-V more then once). I guess not because it was a bad movie, but because it was really just more of the same 'ol same 'ol.

I do think Star Trek need's a break from the small & big screens for a time.

    Ok, I am one of the fans who has seen both TTT and Nem. (TTT 3 times, Nem once.) And I have no inclination to see Nem again. I just would like to ask one question;

Why do so many people think timing had anything to do with how badly Nem is doing? Do you really think that if it had been released a month or two before, or after TTT it would have been a better movie? IMNSHO it would not.

It may have done a tad better at the box office, Phantom. Then again it could not have.

If Nemesis was up with another movie that wasn't a mega-hit like TTT, its likely that fans would have seen both. Most scifi fans can afford 2 or 3 movies during the holiday season.

But this is Twin Towers we are talking about. I know people who are (or who will) see the movie three or four times. After that, where is the cash to see Nemesis, a movie on a franchise which has gotten mixed reviews.

You don't release a scifi or fantasy movie anywhere near the releases of the megahits - LotR and Star Wars for sure unless (like Spiderman) you really know you can go toe-to-toe.
