    Would like to see...

I would like to see Decipher do a New Frontier Supplement. I think some of the most intersting races and charachters have been developed in the New Frontier. Now 15 books and soon to be 17 books, it is the hottest Trek stuff going for Pocket books and obviously has a lot of fan support.

Well, the problem is that this is not canon material material and Decipher only has the liscense to the canon material. Personally I have never read these books so I am not saying they are bad or good...just not canon.

I am so hoping for a Klingon supplement this year.

I think Decipher can produce anything Paramount gives the Nod to. Since Paramount has OK'd 15 books I would imagine they would support a RPG supplement.

I'm hoping for anything, as long as it appears in this geologic epoch.

Then you would be imagining incorrectly.

As a heads up, this same query has been raised in the past... And the LUG/Decipher guys let us know what the liscence problem was.

Paramount will only liscence Canon information, which in their opinion only covers events seen on screen, (not including any of the Animated Series with the sole exception of Yesteryear)... This has since led to all kinds of other canon debats over whether the scene in Wrath of Khan where we find out its Scottys nephew that died, which played on US TV, but not in theatres or anywhere else in the world until the DVD... And I am sure will eventually cover bonus material on DVD...

For example, the Motion(less) picture has screen tests of Xon and Ilia abourd the Enterprise(Phase II) which we all know as Kirks ship and the plots eventually became that film and most of TNG season 1... Does this now counter Kirks desk time as admiral?

    But I digress.

The pooint with the books, is that unlike the Star Wars novels, the books are not allowed to alter the Trek Plot, and therefore must have a built in 'reset switch', this no longer applies to New Frontier or DS9 Relaunch, as they no longer effect events on screen (although any established character that interact with events in their history will still suffer that 'reset to normal')... However the net reselt of this is that none of the books are canon...

Not even the Jeri Taylors 'Pathways' or 'Mosaic' written by the Producer of Voyager about the past historys of the crew...

Not even Andrew Robinsons 'Stitch in Time' which was partially written by the actor/author to explain Garaks mysterious back-story and help him portray the character on screen...

And so the New Frontiers and DS9's relaunch while having little effect against the onscreen Trek universe will be considered non-canon' and thus not licensed for RPG products. This being Paramount, not Lucas Film...

I hope this helps explain the situation.

The advantage of this means that the whole segment is now available for YOU to write your own sourcebook. I had started to do so a while back, but then the books got crap (somewhere about book 8 when he had every simgle incarnation of Majel Barrett-Rodenberry in a book together just to emphasise who Leflers mysterious mother was, and when a member of the crew turned out to be a Q)...

Actually, I hate to correct you Dan (Gurden), but I shall.

Paramount provides a little wiggle room in these regards. While it is true that the Pocket Book novelizations are not canon (nor rightfully considered as such), I should point out that the RPG is not canon either. That is to say that were a pitch put to Paramount for a New Fronteir product there is a remote possibility of doing so.

Of course, since New Frontier is crap, why Decipher ever want to do such a product is really moot. (Had to get my NF jab in.)

Also, you're wrong about the Jeri Taylor novels--they have a degree of "quasi-canon" about them and unless contradicted by on-screen events, are considered canon. I was allowed to reference them for Voyager.

Of course, all of this may have changed since I last worked on a Trek product, so take it all with a grain of salt.

What can I say? You have to have a sense of humour to be a Trek fan these days. You see Nem? Now that was a joke.

Opinion musn't be shared by all since they are Pocket Books best selling Trek novels. Since ecerything is about the greenback, assuming the book sell would translate into RPG supplement sells it would make sense.

"Bottom line" and "makes sense" don't often go hand in hand.

Which is a shame. . . But what are you going to do?
