DS9 continuation: Rising Son

Got it, read it in 3 days. Couldn't put it down. Good read. Another good continuation of the DS9 timeline.

Love the new races introduced especially the Dog Race & Stessie. Gotta Love the political ramifications of the events towards the end of the book.

A great place to start a new Campaign I think. But how can you introduce a Federation Starship to that region of space? One of my ideas is a lone Explorer Size vessel, maybe a Galaxy or something smaller like a Large Cruiser, maybe a Upgraded Ambassador to go out there and to open up diplomatic ties to all those new political entities and to start Federation representation wide spread amoungst the civilizations in the Near Anomoly Gamma Quadrant.

The Gamma Quadrant. The book really establishes a feel for a different Quadrant that was sometimes lacking in episodes of DS9. I guess it was that total lack of Federation/Klingon/Romulan presence and use of creativity with the cultures Jake runs into.

Wondering -- what is Jake's role/occupation in this book? Is he still reporting for the FNS?

Heck, do what they did in the Mission: Gamma quartet of books. They sent the Defiant in for a 6-month exploration cruise; no reason why the Federation can't send in a followup mission.

Er, no. Without giving too much away, waay back in the first two books of the series, called "Avatar, Books I and II", Jake acquires a shuttle and goes into the Gamma Quadrant to look for his dad (for a variety of reasons). Rising Son tells the story of what happened to Jake while all the other books in the series were going on (there's 6 books between Avatar II and Rising Son).

It also serves as a lead-up to the DS9 hardcover coming out this year, called Unity.

These are great books, so check them out. The editor, Marco Palmieri, is clearly a huge DS9 fan. These books read like an eighth season.

Supposedly it throws Jake some 300 parsecs from the 'Anamoly'.

The region of space holds alot of intrigue . . . he travels with . . . I won't say for it would spoil the story, which I think any DS9 fan should read.

Lets just say it isn't as structured as the Alpha quadrant by any means . . . and the Dominion for the most part is an after thought in most peoples minds . . . however by the end of the book that may change.

I wonder whether the Federation would be open to oppening up Diplomatic relations with all these new planets and civilizations. Nothing like having representation, and a place for you people to go when they need help far away from home. I mean setting up Embassys . . . apparantly that's not real big in the ST world. Idea for a Campaign?

No problem. I can't recommend these books highly enough. If you liked DS9 at all, you'll like the books. Heck, if you liked TNG, you'll like the books. Ro is a major character.

This is so ironic. I stopped reading Pocket Books' Star Trek original novels when DS9 first aired. Lives of Dax brought me back! I was hoping they wouldn't pull the Invasion and Day of Honor extended ad nausuam nonense. No such luck. Fall of Terok Nor was a good start but should have been one book. Section 31 and Gateways (including What Lay Beyond) tries to boost their "ratings" of the other relaunch series. GAG. They should give the other series a vacation and concentrate on DS9 and SCE. I can't wait for Unity, Tales of the Dominion War and Prophecy and Change!

I almost want to pick up the HARDCOVER edition of Unity.........

Almost? Come on! This book is going to be fantastic, and I'm thrilled they're releasing it as a hardcover.

I'm really happy with the DS9 books. I know the editor, Marco Palmieri, has big, cool things in store for the series. Can't wait!

which leads me to wonder (and hope)... Will Decipher will ever publish a sourcebook on the post-dominion war, based on the DS9 Relaunch? The idea of a post-DW book is valid, IMHO, as I know lot of people want to play Star Trek, not re-play it...
After the war, it is total free hands for the GM. So a book that would provide him material to help start a new series would be very valuable.
Now, if that new material would be based on the DS9 relaunch, at least partially (not everything in the alpha quadrant happens around Bajor), it would be so cool, and would strenghten that beloved feeling of continuity.

Ok, I stop daydreaming. I know it will never happen due to rights issues...
