Actually I just thought of hanging him in the rigging for a day or two.

But really, I would have pretty harsh consequences for disobeying direct legal orders in a combat situation, but that's just me.

If the CO or XO gives an order that the players don't like, I pause the game and let them discuss it out of character. That way, when we resume, when the CO/XO gives their order, the other characters under his/her command have no problem following it.

Oops... posted without reading the full situation. Irrelevant remarks removed

Having said that Sarfleet, no matter how un-military you care to make it, is a uniformed paramilitary organization who's officers have legal authority to give orders to subordinates. If your fellow players aren't into that, maybe you should choose another game/setting.

On the other hand, even the Master of a tramp freighter expects his orders, and the orders of his Mates, to be followed.

Thanks a lot for all your answers

if I understand well I'm too nice with my crew, I'll try to be more
serious and I'll correct all those that will contest my rank

too nice... it's quite funny for a cardassian

but I hope I won't have my crew against me all the time I think it will become annoying

but one more time thanks for all your "best CO advices"

Although at first this method will slow down the game some, I think it's the best solution all-round. The "Starfleet Concept" is that subordinates trust their officers to do the right thing (most of the time). They've been to the Academy, learned the principles of the Federation, etc, etc.

Players don't have that trust or knowledge. Letting the CO explain his/her reasoning to the others lets them develop that trust - eventually, we found, you don't need to keep stopping, since the others do trust the commander, and obey their orders immediately (well, most of the time )
When you are dead, you don't know that you are dead. It is difficult only for others.

It's the same when you are stupid...
