It came up in another thread and Iknow it has been hashed to death on the boards, but once again here it goes. I don't like that a single torpedo only adds one point to the damage total. It makes no sense. what does make sense is game balance. In my house rules a photorp does (depending on the race) 2 pluse 3d6. so anywhere from five to 20 pts. Play testing on this worked for me. Tell me Trekmasters what Do you think of my method?
The balance comes from torpedoes NOT doing 20 points of damage each. No ship in the game could withstand a full barrage of The Galaxy or the sovrigen. That is not supported by the series or any novelization. IT would equally end the game if the enemy had the same capacity. Game balance is maintained by torpedos that are launched in a volley only doing minamally more damage, thus drawing out a conflict and allowing players to have chance to get the heck out of dodge..or whatever they want to do. I subscribe to a more variable damage scale, and it has worked well. It has the same STIII feel to it...."lucky shot" When you fire multiple torpedoes in my game, you just roll more dice. Ships take more damage, but are usually not blown out of the water. In conjunction with the SSD's Starship combat has become loose and fun, but not vauge and confusing as it was before.
If you haven't done so already, download SPACEDOCK. In SPACEDOCK multiple torps hits add 25% to the damage per hit. SO in the basic rules that usually +5 instead of +1.
There are a lot of nice rules in SPACEDOCK that can be easily adpated to the CORE RULES.
