While planning the future of my campaign I've designed to have "season" set within a huge area of space that until now has been unexplored due to it being surronded by a kind of galatic storm (similar to the galatic barrier) that destroys any ship that goes through.
The game will start at the beginning of season 4 so the Federation has just learn't that changelings are everywhere. With this new bit of information they have gone over recent intelligence reports and have made a disturbing discovery.
Cardassian, Romulan, Klingon and Federation ships have gone missing but last reports indicate they were heading for a gap in the storm barrier.
Its Starfleets opinion that those ships have been taken over by changelings (or at least the commanding officers)and they have entered the unexplored area of space to establish bases close to Federation space. When the storm breaks again in six months they'll attack.
Since the characters ship is nearby and at a space station they are assigned to enter the storm and locate the missing ships while also exploring. Loaded up with supplies they are sent through. More ships would have been sent but the gap in the storm closes in a few days, not enough time for more ships to arrive.
So the ship will be in an area of space roughly covering 100,000 light years, exploring new worlds, always on the look out for the missing ships and wandering if they'll make it back in time.
Along the way they'll discover that the barrier is artifical and that the whole area was a kind of Vault of an ancient race storing the weapons, science and beloved adopted worlds.
This will increase the threat to the Federation as the Dominion forces could use this advanced technoligy against the Federation.
Any thoughts or advice for this campaign. Anyone run something similar?
That should have been 10,000 light years. It needs to be big enough for a ship to take several months to explore and a lot of room for the missing ships to hide. They'll also have to be aware they need to turn around and get back in time. The fact that it turns out to be artifical helps explain the huge area.
What type of ship are you crew on! This sounds like a very intresting idea, could you keep us informed of how your creew handldes things. I only ask because I have not played for over 8 months and I am getting withdrawl symptoms.

Inter Arma Enim Silent Leges
Its an Ambassador class ship. The characters already know that their captain is going to be killed soon (due to some time travelling aliens).
My plan is to knock off some of the senior staff during the ordeal, damage the ship and promote the characters.
By the time they get out the Dominion war will have started, their own ship will be decommisioned and they'll be given the all new, all improved USS Aurora-A.
This will put them at the forefront of the action making important decisions during the war.
Ah - come on, Ambassador class ships are rare enough ON screen - don't take one out in your series! Refit her at the end - maybe with one or two experimental "goodies" found during the exploration of the vault. She'll do fine in the DW.
If it's a big ship like an Ambassador, the best option would be a plasma storm (like the ones in the Badlands). Remember Janeway's line that Voyager was the only Fed ship that could navigate in the Badlands - only small or maneuverable ships are going to manage to successfully "run the gauntlet". Your PCs' ship will have no option but to wait till the storm abates (unless they intend ending up like Gul Evek's Galor -Class cruiser !)

Thanks for the info Ether, I am currently trying to realistically upgrade an Ambassador class at the moment. If I get the bugs out of the main computer I may post them.
